At the moment I'm considering getting a GEC(my first) in pearl. Pull me across the line and show me some pictures.

Regards
Alexander

Very nice! Are the scales genuine pearl laminated over with one thick piece of acrylic? I wonder if the material will have more expansion and/or contraction property as compare to bone/stag/wood? I'm interested in couple patterns with pearl material and wonder how the scales will hold up in time.

Seadweller....

I'll answer part of your question...will the handles expand/contract ?

Are the Perylics..( Pearl Acrylic ).....the same as the Celluloid handles? NO. The Perylics are an acrylic acetate base which form a much harder material that does not contain the suspended gases that can leech off like the celluloid.

Will the Perylics scratch easily? The key word is 'easily'. In short no, BUT, like virtually any handle material, it can scratch and with time and usage will show surface scratches. If you carry your knife on a regular basis in a pocket full of change, keys, etc, in time it will pick up surface scratches. Will it easily dent or chip? No. If you whack it with a hammer, yes.

Can the scratches be buffed out? Yes. The Perylic is a very hard material that can be shaped, sanded and buffed relatively easily. Surface scratches could be cleaned up with a buffing wheel and different grits of buffing compound such as jeweler's rouged.

Okay had to check other facts first....

The handle material is a base of Pearl with a laminate of clear acrylic on top

I love the idea of a laminated pearl. This is new knowledge to me. I have a couple pearl-handled knives, and they do tend to show up scratches more easily than I would like. This "perylic" stuff looks great! I definitely need to look into a few of these.

Here's an end view of a recent GEC purchase. In this case yellow Awbi shell is covered by two clear acrylic panels. This arrangement is called "looking glass" by GEC nomenclature. Done this way it's supposed to be more durable and it certainly makes for a less expensive knife than using full pearl/shell handle slabs.

As I understand it Boggs, the term "perylic" was coined by GEC as a way to distinguish their higher end acrylic handle materials (seen on Northfield branded black gold & stained glass perylics) from thier regular line of acrylics typically seen on Tidioute branded knives.

Hi Boggs, thank you for the info!

Half Congress is stunning, Rick!

Biglmbass: from the top view photo of your yellow Awbi shell, is that of a shadow pattern?

Can the "perylic" crack over time? I assume this material is probably stronger and less maintenance than bone / stag?
