So, With a few pending orders for future purchases, I start to think about handle materials. Id love to see what you guys Like to see on a handle. Aside from your own, I would love to see other ramdom pictures. When I order a knife, I request some of the nicest they would be willing to part with. If anyone would share some photo ideas with me, Id appreciate it very much. Note that I am more into the forged folder then a fixed, although I am beggining to feel some kind of change. Im just curious if any new photos have been around with some nice handles to look at.

Jon, here's a few.

sorry i don't have any pics but a quick question for you don.....are those pieces of ivory treated in any way to get all those colors or are they a natural phenomenon......all the way from green to blue to red.....if they are natural do you know what causes this to happen.....sorry for going off topic.....ryan

Blocks of stabilized woods that I photographed in Edmund Davidson's
workshop last June.
Slabs of stabilized, dyed or double-dyed wood are often used as the
handle material for Edmund’s Integrals. Seen here are blocks of box elder
and California buckeye, their beautiful colors to be fully displayed on the
polished handles of future knives. This type of handle material is another
great example of technology bringing durability and beauty to the table.
Box elder is one member of the maple family that was once considered
useless in many respects. It was so soft that it could not be used for most
purposes. Figuring out the correct wood-stabilizing process and then
adding cleverly formulated dyes has created beauty in wood the likes of
which the world has never known. Today it is difficult to imagine
Edmund’s Integrals without the amazing colors and ornamented
patterning of stabilized wood.

All natural from being in the ground for 1000s of years. Good stuff

<sound of wrench being thrown into works> ;)

Question: why are those raging colours acceptable on box elder but not on...[gulp]...giraffe bone?

.(awesome ivory, Don! )

I'm not so sure those raging colors are acceptable :) but I really like the two blocks in the lower left.

Actually, the “raging colors” look truly amazing on Edmund’s Integrals.
During the stabilizing process, special epoxies are impregnated into the wood
in deep vacuum conditions. At the same time colorful dyes can be added and
these too penetrate the porous wood to create the beautiful results seen here.

The wood can be dyed with one color or double dyed. The gigantic Orgasmatron
seen below, was made by Edmund Davidson with stabilized and double dyed box elder
handle scales.

This Full Integral sub-hilt is made of 440-C steel, Rc 58, hand-rubbed finish all over.
Blade length 12 3/4" (324 mm), overall length 20 1/4" (514 mm).
The rough bar of steel was 1 5/16"(33 mm) thick, 4" (102 mm) wide and 20 5/8"
(524 mm) long and it weighed 30 pounds (13.6 kg).

The knife was finished on the 14th of July 2007, becoming the 2813th knife
Edmund had completed to that day.

Here are some various bowie examples. The two Don Hanson's on top (I know, where is the ivory? Don does slip some stag in occasionally :D), and some ivory and walnut Mark Holson beauties.

Joe - bowie heaven must look a lot like that.

Roger

Yeah, I think so, Roger. I wish I could claim all of the above, but one out of four ain't bad. :)

Here is a new one out of Anders Hogstrom's shop. I wish I had a close up of the handle, but I don't. Anders says the walrus is beach-washed with reds, blues and tan colors. Plus, this is his first S-guard.
