Yes, I know this type of thread has been done before, but not since I added a glass breaker to my Salt I :) It's a carbide tip, which I will shape into a finer point with a diamond file. The glass breaker is secured up against the lanyard ring-hole-insert and epoxied in. Pretty solid.

I tried to mount one on the end of my Cold Steel Voyager, but I cracked and broke the plastic back spacer. I would really like to do this to more of my knives.

Question for you guys... I have a Spyderco Caly 3 CF and ZDP-189, given to me by my parents. One of my favorite knives. I'd love to install a carbide glass breaker in the end, just like this one. There is always the chance of messing it up though and I'd be drilling into a solid metal back spacer. I'm mostly confident :o I think that would make it possibly one of the ultimate EDC knives. What do you think? Should I go for it?

That's a pretty cool mod. Have you tried it to see if it works? It would suck to be in a situation where you need it and have it fail.

Thanks.
I haven't tested it, but I want to. My thought is, at the very least, it gives me a much better chance of escaping through a window than any of my other options of "breaking out". It is really solid in the end of the knife. Even without testing, I am very confident that it will work.

Ehh, the Caly is more of a gentleman's knife in my eyes. Although it can definitely perform, I feel like it would destroy the integrity of the knife, but that's just my opinion. I'd practice on a few more beaters before you attempt it on a nice folder.

Thanks for the input.
I do agree that the end of the handle is a nice, rounded, discrete end. I don't consider it a gentleman's folder, for me. It is a little too heavy, and I have a couple knives that are lighter. It is truly a slicer, with the ZDP-189, so it wouldn't see any real hard use.
Practice is definitely good advice :)

I personally would leave the Caly alone and just stash the salt in the car for use if needed. Either that or get a keychain glass breaker like a Res-Q-me.

I should also mention that I have 3 cars. That means, if I want to stash something for an emergency, I have to buy three of them and find the same location in all 3 cars. I have Res-Q-Mes, but I don't have similar solutions for storage in all of my cars. That's why I kinda like having my 1 tool right in my pocket. You have a good point though.

Drilled and tapped a grub screw to make an adjustable detent to allow for left handed opening on my zaan (detent too stiff for left handed operation, for me anyway)

^that's crazy, id be so nervous drilling into a crk...

I haven't even recieved my Southard or waved matriarch 2 but already looking to mod or custom scales...

Jason, wow. Can you explain how it works? Also, did you use a drill press to drill that hole so perfectly?

Hey, look i wouldn't recommend it at all :). It's purely there so I can at least open the knife with my left hand(because I'm left handed). It's my work knife, so it's not a safe queen and not worried about warranty, as it doesn't exist due to my location and circumstances. So it can either sit there and look pretty, or do the mod, and make it a user. I previously had a detachable thumb disk attached to blade, but didn't look nice, so made a plan

It's simple how it works, it adjusts how far the blade will travel down to meet up with the ball detent

Did I use a drill press? No, I just used a hand drill and then taped a spirit level to my head, and tried hard to keep it steady. :)

No I'm kidding, yes I used the correct machinery and tools to do the job. Wouldn't never do it if I didn't. Not the kind of knife to say "oops!" on...
