Need some inspiration here, getting my Mora #3 and other gear ready for a wilderness trip here in a few weeks.
I am already working on a custom sheath, and am considering some sort of handle wrap, as the wood handle is fairly slick. Show me some inspiration!

does making the sheath lefty friendly with better retention count?

as for the handle slickness, go with the rubber-handled ones...they're better ergonomically designed anyway compared to the round handled ones.

Yep, that counts.I like that black on orange scheme. What did you do to the sheath for retention? I will have to keep that in mind for my other synthetic Moras.
Right now I'm just really into natural materials, I go through phases :)

Here is what I have so far:

I didn't like the stock red paint handle so much, so I torched it off and sanded it down a little bit. I also have a nice start on a natural patina methinks, thats mostly from cutting up pork... This used to be my BBQ knife :D

I cut down the stock plastic sheath to use as an insert in the leather, and it works real nice for that. Cut it down and wet formed around it, and then used Pliobond(really awesome contact cement, its like rubber cement on steroids) to hold it in place.
Between the plastic, and the handle shape, its like I have adjustable tension... If I want more I just push it in further, if I want less I don't jam it in the sheath so hard:D Its enough to where I can turn the rig upside down and shake it around without the knife coming out, but its still easy enough to release with one hand.

The jute wrap on the sheath is there because there are a couple of small spots on the back where the stitching is starting to stretch apart, and because I think it looks cool lol. It also gives a good place to put your thumb when removing the knife from the sheath.

Oh I should also add, I did not make the leather sheath. I actually got it a while back off of ebay, I happened to find a seller with 3 different sizes in stock, this one fits a #3 fairly well(6" blade), it was advertised for a 7". He also had a smaller one for a 4 or 5" I believe, as well as one for a fillet knife.

Maybe try your hand at stipling. Gives the same grip as checkering without the hassle of buying special tools or years of practice. A nail and tack hammer are all you need. Draw a design with pencil and start making divots. Check out youtube for some how-to vids. Some use a dremel and cone type milling bit, but with a dremel it is easy to screw up faster.

Tried to make some super Moras. One is G-10, one is Micarta with a 57100, and another is wrapped in micarta

Wow those are awesome, I'm actually trying my hand at homegrown micarta for the first time tomorrow... Maybe I need to order up some blanks from Ragnar

I like it but why not keep the blade polished? I like mines shiney.

I did something very similar with my sheath. The plastic sheath is inside this one. Since this photo was taken, I have also sanded off the red, took it all apart, and expoxied it all back together.

Here I again used the plastic as an insert and created a more military inspired sheat...like the AFSK sheath sort of.

nice pics guys, is the inner tube holding the firesteel in place, Foto? I like that, i need to do that for my clipper.

Thats some pretty good looking leather work Hoosier, I really like that pilot styled sheath. I'll eventually get good enough to do that :) I can't stitch that well yet.

And Eccvets, I like shinies too, but I also like to watch a natural patina evolve over the course of a knife's life. It will also be some added protection from rust once I move out into the redwoods :)

Are those Mora blanks that you customized Rich? Looks pretty nice, I'm really considering doing that, especially if I get this homemade micarta thing down. Would be nice to make a custom chopper out of a Strömeng leuku blank.

Crunky

The top one is a Mora blade from Ragnar, the other two are just stock Moras that I customized by sanding off the red paint, adding the pommels and staining them.

I locked my knife into the sheath this way... the firesteel is held tightly to the sheath by a 2" piece of bike tube. I tied a loop of paracord to the steel, then twisted it and slid the end loop over the knife handle. Had to mess with it a bit to get it just the right length. To draw the knife, just give it slack by pulling the firesteel upward about an inch, then grab the knot and pull the loop upward over the handle. While you're on the trail, the knife is held securely in the sheath.
Also attached are firestraws, a watch-band liquid-filled compass, fishing line, hooks & sinkers, some waxed twine, an emergency whistle, and a fresnel lens and thin plastic signal mirror (I had to cut both down just a bit to tuck under the Ranger band without sticking out past the edges of the sheath), and I clipped a small light by Egear to the paracord for hands-free lighting.
