I am considering making myself a hefty leuku from a rather large Nicholson file and need some design inspiration. I am looking for what works in the design of an leuku and what you think doesn't work. What you like and what you hate. The knife will be full tang and of course made from the file, so I will be confined to the profile of the file. Aside from those constraints I am all ears!

Thanks for your help!

What is a leukus?

Its a Sami pattern knife, much like the puukko however designed for more rigorous tasks such as chopping or delimbing.

Here is an example from the internet:

When you make them from a file do you take the heat treat out and then once done do you normalize the steel and re heat treat? Is the file W-2?

Yes, I will be annealing the file first. Then going through the standard stock removal process, then normalizing and heat treating. From what I can tell online its a proprietary blend that is pretty much a mix of W2 and 1095. Everyone says to treat it like 1095. I have worked with them in the past and when you treat them like you would 1095 they come out fantastic. I am sure there is a "better" way to do it, but it works for me.

Here's a leuku inspired camp knife I had made out of 9260. The handle shape is a bit different from traditional leukus since this knife has a full flat tang. The photos are from a few years ago when I tested it out, the maker wanted to put a thicker edge on it but I thought we should see how a thin convex edge held up first. It did everything I needed, from skinning and butchering to chopping and splitting wood.
