Let's see your classic Safety / Double-Edge razors...

I've recently gotten into double-edged (DE) safety razors after becoming intrigued with them seeing the Pawn Star's TV show and Rick Harrison's advertisements selling these razors and proclaiming the great shave they give. I researched them and remembered watching my Dad using one as a kid in the late 60's. What the heck? Why not give it a try? So I ordered a Merkur 34c and boar brush and shaving soap and away I went!

Three weeks later I now shave EVERY DAY and in fact look forward to my shave each day - that's a switch believe me as I've always HATED SHAVING and the ingrown hairs on my neck, rash and the outrageous cost of the refill cartridges at about $4-$5 each (one per week makes for $20 a month plus shaving cream). These blades if ordered in bulk online are 9.8 cents each!!!

To me the little ritual of washing and then working up a lather in a bowl with the brush, painting on the menthol scented lather and then using an old classic vintage razor is just way too cool. At the end a splash of cold water on the face then a splash of aftershave (I've been using Pinaud Clubman - this is THE 1950's-60's barbershop aftershave you remember in the old shops as a kid perhaps if you're old enough) and I'm feeling relaxed and fresh. Oh and the wife loves it too, as I rarely shaved in the past, only when I had to. :)

My vintage 1955 Gillette Super Speed :)

This is my '55 Gillette Parat, British-made razor. It outdoes the Superspeed with a little bit of extra weight...

Gold Aristocrat adjustable 1964

Also regular Aristocrat adjustable
Merkur slant and adjustable

Some more pics:

1. Birth year Y3 40's style Gillette Superspeed.

2. Gillette Flaretip, year unknown.

3. '61 Gillette Fatboy.

I've whittled down my razors from a couple dozen to 4 over the years. Many Fatboys, Slims, Superspeeds, etc.. have come & gone. I like my Edwin Jagger DE89 with a Bulldog handle as my primary and then the Black Beauty, Old & Ever-Ready single. Shaving like this can be almost therapeutic and the choices/options keep it interesting.

Here's a pic of my shave den & travel kit I put together.

Ranchman, My Gillette Superspeed looks a lot like yours. The head and flared handle tip looks exactly like yours but the barreled handle part has a different pattern. Any educated guess on the year? Thanks, DM

Those are beautiful. My grandpa use to use one. I was too young to think about it when he died, but I wish I would have got his little collection. I'm in the same "hate shaving" boat. My barber uses a straight razor on the back of my neck and around my ears, when I get a hair cut...not a fan of that.

My grandfather started me on my lifelong shaving habit, and the tool I trained with was a Gillette Slim Adjustable. It was a great treat when my mother announced she was no longer going to cut my hair and sent me to the local barber in town. $1.50 got me a great haircut and got the neck and around the ears also. I didn't mind it, and still don't. And my grandfather's razor is a part of my EDC rotation, a real treasure.

David,

Do you have a pic? It sounds like your's might be the Super Speed "TV" version from the 1950's.

Very cool shave den you have there Steve. I was just thinking the other day how the Aqua Velva bottles used to have that older style blue cap. Today's bottle is different and rather plain. Your pic has one with the old style cap there on the shelf - exactly how I remembered it!

Here's my newest razor and it's one I've fallen in love with. I've had it a week now and shaved with it every day since it's arrival. It's machined from solid stainless steel and I must say it's the most amazing shave. An absolute masterpiece.

This is an Above The Tie "Kronos" with 3.5" handle and M1 head...

Hows the shave? Beautiful razor!

The shave is spectacular. It's a joy to shave with the ATT. They are available with different heads depending on what level of "aggressiveness" you're looking for. You can also choose whether you want open comb or a solid safety bar.
