I've recently gotten into double-edged (DE) safety razors after becoming intrigued with them seeing the Pawn Star's TV show and Rick Harrison's advertisements selling these razors and proclaiming the great shave they give. I researched them and remembered watching my Dad using one as a kid in the late 60's. What the heck? Why not give it a try? So I ordered a Merkur 34c and boar brush and shaving soap and away I went!
Three weeks later I now shave EVERY DAY and in fact look forward to my shave each day - that's a switch believe me as I've always HATED SHAVING and the ingrown hairs on my neck, rash and the outrageous cost of the refill cartridges at about $4-$5 each (one per week makes for $20 a month plus shaving cream). These blades if ordered in bulk online are 9.8 cents each!!!
To me the little ritual of washing and then working up a lather in a bowl with the brush, painting on the menthol scented lather and then using an old classic vintage razor is just way too cool. At the end a splash of cold water on the face then a splash of aftershave (I've been using Pinaud Clubman - this is THE 1950's-60's barbershop aftershave you remember in the old shops as a kid perhaps if you're old enough) and I'm feeling relaxed and fresh. Oh and the wife loves it too, as I rarely shaved in the past, only when I had to.
