Hey all, I will be ordering a custom fixed blade rigger and spike soon and want to see what some of you other guys have that's designed for shipboard use. I like the traditional styles, but I know there are some real creative types here. I don't care if its a user or a safe queen, post 'em if you got 'em!

Mine will be a user as I sail semi-professionally, and I will post it here when I get it.

Cool.... Hopefully folks post here. As an ex-professional mariner and diver.... I've been interested in designing both a stainless/carbon San Mai rigger and diving knife...

Yeah I hope so as well. It's kinda a small niche for collectors, and even smaller for custom knives, but I hope some have them! Even if it just a normal knife with a matching spike and you use it on a boat or for similar tasks, I would like to see what works for you.

You do some SERIOUS sailing Xander. I saw your post in the other thread. I have a couple of production rigging knives, but I can't recall ever seeing a custom one. Buck made a nice one, the 315. The older ones with nickle silver bolsters are quite collectible.

Do you have someone that is going to make yours? I'd like to see some custom rigging knives too:D

So what are thoughts regarding separate but matching marlinspike vs. folding spike? And the hawksbill shape? I'm envisioning something fixed blade, kinda Japanese in simplicity and overall look, recycled rubber/horse stall mat full tang handle and stainless/high carbon laminate blade with separate but matching stainless/carbon spike. Something stout in the spine for prying. As a diver.. I loved prying. Black dyed leather sheath with a 'neck knife' option. Still working on diving sheath. I suppose kydex is the way... But something i haven't worked with.

I am very interested in this thread

It is not a custom but I have been using an A G Russel seamaster for years

I usually wear an over belt with a pair of van staal pliers both on lanyards

Peter- yeah that was a fun regatta from a few years back, we tied for third in our division. As for the rigger i am going to order, i am going to go with Daniel Fairly in Colorado. He's a super chill dude, i like his style and he grew up sailing, even though he's landlocked now.

Scott- good question about fixed v. folding spike. Personally i use both depending on the task, when building new running rigging i use a fixed blade and seperate spike, but often when on smaller boats i carry a myerchin lightknife. The features you describe would make for an interesting knife! I am thinking of going with a sheepsfoot or reverse tanto, dropped edge, slight belly evenly spread the length of the blade, 4.5" cutting edge, full tang and thick spine drawn back really soft for hitting it with a hammer to get through thick line better. Handle will be some sort of natural material. Spike will be 6.5" and tapered from 3/8" down to a "squid shaped" tip, which is a round taper that is flattened to create a small triangle wider that the taper like looking at the body of a squid with its fins out. Sheath is yet TBD.

Joe- that AGRussel is a nice looking knife, hadn't seen that one before. I really like the serrations up front where you need it most. I may have to get me one of those for grins and giggles!

Hopefully someone will post a custom knife here soon!
