If you care to share your tank, we would LOVE to see it :)

Nice tank So-lo. I used to have a similar set up with a few oscars and african cichlids, but sadly I had to give it up when I moved. Is that an albino pleco? You should check out the gold dot plecos, they're much smaller but really neat looking...plus they help keep the tank clean!

Great looking Tank So-Lo.

I had Tanks when my Kids were young. I would use Mountain Spring water for them and the fish started breeding like crazy. :D

What brought the end of the Fish Tanks, was a surprise Fish and Plants gift from my children on my Birthday.
The Fish or Plants had a Disease which wiped out all the tanks quickly.

Thanks :D

I'll have to look into them Gold Dots, and yes that is an albino pleco. We have had him for about six years, he is tough as nails. Even made the hour long trip when we moved back by our parents (built in free babysitters :D)

Also lived in a 20 gallon tote box for two days (with a bubbler) while I did our hardwood floors. We lost two full grown angles from doing that floor, too much stress or dust? :grumpy:

So he has lived alone for a year or so, I wanted Oscars.. The Mrs and Kids wanted neons. We tried a few neons, and they kind of dropped off at a rate of one every couple months.

So now I get my Oscars!!! :D

I'm a little worried that the 55 will not hold them for more than a year :o I'll wait and see, if they get too big we will get a 125 :D

It's the thought that counts :o

errr...

I mean.... Riiiiiiiight????

:o

Thanks for the kind words, the kids like it and it's pretty easy to keep up. Guests really like it, I have to get some more airline and reroute the cord going up the back. I'll route it under the gravel and up the left corner, should be hidden a little better that way.

You can't see in the pix, but there is a bubbler that shoots little tiny bubbles up the whole back wall, and you can kind of see the one near the middle. It shoots larger bubbles, the fish love swiming through it and even just hovering over it....

Must feel like a hot tub jet :D

Same thing happened with my tank a few months back. I had some cichlids that were a few years old. Really getting up there in size.
My pleco died, so I bought a couple of replacemants. Next thing I knew, they all started dying. It did happen fast.

Quarantine new tankmates in a smaller set up... DO not introduce them into general population immediately. I used to breed discus extensively and had a fishroom with more than 18 tanks of discus. One bad fish is all it takes to wipe out a whole colony. Sharing nets is a big no no too... Discus are just more sensitive than other tropicals. Oscars are as tough as old boots. They can be trained to take thawed frozen shrimps, too much feeder fish is bad for them unless you gutload the feeders; feed them lots of good flakes and pellets before feeding them to the Oscars. I've seen an Oscar gulp down a whole mouse but try not to do that in front of the young ones.

Great advice Loneriderz. The fish were very relaxing to watch. Maybe I'll start up another tank sometime.

My setup was a 5 gallon for Quarantine two 10 gallons for breeder tanks and a 30 Gallon main tank.

The Fish and the plants were placed in all the tanks as the surprise while I was at work.
Those kids, they meant right. :D :)

BTW Tanks are easy to find and cheap at yard sales.

My tank is in a sorry state right now in anticipation of a move, but it was, when fully populated a nice 29 gal. South American tank: two Bolivian Rams (highly recommend these guys - they really color-up when you get them home into a good tank), a nice school of neon tetras, a small school of cories and 3 otos for cleanup. I'm a big proponent of low-tech planted tanks. I use java fern in mine, since it doesn't really need crazy lighting to thrive. A bonus of having the plants is I don't have to use carbon.

To me, the fish seem to thrive best if you pick all your fish from the same area (South America, Central America, Africa, S.E. Asia, etc.) My favorite iteration of this tank was when I had it as a S.E. Asian tank: a school of tiger barbs (they make for a really interesting school), a red-tailed shark, Siamese algae eater, and a dwarf gourami.

Hehe... I love how fishes that I used to catch in ditches behind my house are considered exotic halfway across the world. I'd love to have large and smallmouth bass here... :o

Tiger barbs are exciting to watch in a large school, especially at feeding time. They actually grow a lot bigger than the ones we see in a fish store. I remember catching palm sized ones on crickets when I was a boy. The one local fish I will always love... Archers. Always a hit with the kids... I'm in the middle of moving houses but once I've settled in I'll get some pics up.

My current craze are arowanas... I'm starting to prefer large predators lately.

A tip... For plants, do a quick dip in diluted potassium permaganate (sp) solution if you do not have access to a quarantine tank. 3-5mins is sufficient. This should be avoided for moss as they have lower tolerance levels. Should get rid most of the nasty stuff. Rinse in freshwater before introducing it into the main tank. Most diseases bourned by plants are actually caused by parasite harboring snails that hitch a ride on them.

I love fish tanks... had a big 50 gal. when the kids were young. I've always dreamed of having a huge saltwater tank built into a partition wall between two rooms (visible from both sides).

I may put up another fresh water tank one day... Hmmm.... I wonder how many Brook Trout a 50 gal. would hold? Hmmmm....

the new kick now with saltwater tanks are the nano reef setup, they are sefl contained tanks , they are really neat, i will get some pics up of mine asap

here is a link to what i have: http://www.aquacave.com/detail.aspx?ID=1212

The cool thing about these is that they are ready to go, They have the Filter, skimmer lights, refug. They have all you need to "keep" soft coral.

Very cool setups considering a good filter for anything larger than a 30 gal is $120 and up.

Over the years I have had many aquariums. Fresh water, salt water, brackish water. My last aquarium had koi. They started out at about 1.5" long and cost $1.25 each. When I sold them, they were 7 to 9" long and I got $60 each for them. Most of the other fish I had looked like this.

i've had several setups over the past 5 years or so (maybe 6 or 7, not sure when i started exactly)...first setup i got given some frontosa fry and some other african cichlids, then got a massive rostratus male with 6 females and that was fun until the male died (was old when i got it). Now I have 2 x red oscars in a 4 footer, a electric yellow in a 2 footer, and a axolotl.

some vids is all i got, my tanks are on the other side of the planet atm, in the US and my tanks are in australia:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-eUjtFXFVY oscars, i have a different layout now...I change it every 3 months to keep the fish entertained with their surroundings.

That's not a Fish Tank as much as a Food Tank.:thumbup:

Now you have me thinking about starting an Alaskan King Crab Tank. :D
