We started to have some success on another thread with forum members posting pics of their S.R. Johnsons. I'm hoping that a dedicated thread to share examples of his work will result in a deluge. So come on folks, let's start of 2009 in style and show your S.R. Johnsons!

I'll start it off with something a little out of the ordinary. The following 5-knife set depicts the African Big Five in incredible scrim by Ron Skaggs. Each is 8 1/2" OAL with 4 1/4" blades and 18K pins and tubes. Steve is well known for making "investment grade working knives," however in my opinion these are simply high art

Asher,

This is a truly amazing set that I have never seen before.
It is not "a little out of the ordinary" - it is EXTRAORDINARY!!

When was it finished?

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Dr. Darom,

If I remember correctly from the conversation I had with Steve, I think he completed the set in the mid-80's. I don't even know if Steve has ever seen the finished product in person. I always have to remind myself that quite often the knives are finished before engraving or scrim is started; the exception being the full integral that requires engraving/scrim to be completed prior to heat treating.

I will definitely bring them to ECCKS next month so Steve or anyone else who would like to can take a look.

I am speechless! Thank you for sharing yours.

I wish I had an SR Johnson to share.

Here are two SRJ "David's Fighters". One was made for my
book on "Modern Custom Fixed-Blade Knives" (it is numbered
001 and is in the possession of a NY collector) and the one on
the right, is numbered 2 of 2.....

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

He does amazing work, especially for only having 1.5 thumbs. I watched his subhilt dvd, it all looks so effortless.

Wow, what incredible knives!! Those are all beautiful, beautiful knives. Thanks for posting pix.

For all you SR Johnson fans, here are 30 of his name etches
that I have accumulated so far. Steve send me three more
today (already in place) and I know of at least 3 that I do not
have yet.
One is an SRJ - John Young collaboration and one more is the
etch on the amazing scrimshawed set above....... :)

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

There is also a Horn-Johnson logo from their collaboration.

Yes you are right. That makes four missing so far.....

How about sending me a picture of the etch on one of
your scrimed knives. Shoot close up and have a white
piece of paper reflect in the blade... that will do it.
Try it it is very easy..... :)

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

I would sure like to be able to show you my Johnson's, however haven't been fortunate enough to acquire any. I have been in pursuit of a few but lost out. :( When the real special ones (not to say they ain't all special ;)) hit the market you have to be quick.
