Let's send Sal $100 for a G-10 Spyderhawk

Sal presented the idea in a different thread, that if we forumites are truly interested in a G-10 Spyderhawk, that we start a thread devoted to that idea; "reverse the risk" and "Put our money where our mouth is" so to speak, and send him a check for $100.00. He would collect our checks for three months, and if he had enough interest - 500 units worth of commitment (that means 500 kninves guys) he would produce the model.

Well, here it is! I am IN!

Lets all sign on to this and see if we can get that G-10 Spyderhawk.

BTW - Lets stipulate that the ONLY diference is going to be in handle material - the blade remains SE. I suggest this not because I have a particular desire for SE - I actually generally prefer PE - but because Sal has made it pretty clear that a PE blade is a whole different ball game. If we hang to gether with this one concept I believe we have a lot better chance of success - perhaps the only chance of success.

MORE BTW - I also would prefer that the check be deposited - not simply held. Kinda brings me a little closer to the pig than the chicken in terms of commitment.

Happy Holidays to all :)

Chuck
Edited to correct number of knives required - Please read Carlos' post below.

If the check is deposited then it makes Spyderco responsible for re-issuing checks to people if the project falls through. Another complication.

BTW, it is not a $500 commitment, but 500 units, or $50,000. (see quote below)

Why don't you start a thread asking for a G-10 handled Large Harpy. Let's estimate a MSRP of $125. per unit. Let's say that these could actually be purchased for $100. Everyone interested would send me $100 for each piece. When I receive enough to invest in the run, I will begin (500 would be a good indicator). If I do not receive enough in a 3 month period, I will destroy the checks.

Sad but true. 500 units would be damned-near impossible to guarantee from forumites. But hey, let's see if folks reach for their wallets...497 left for all the rest...

Figure on the PE not happening. If you want to really get the G-10 Spyderhawk off the ground, make it happen with the serrated edge, and maybe you might have a chance of a plain edge later. I'm down for at least three, and as soon as Sal gives us the go ahead to send the checks, it'll be there.

Hey Mike,
I've tried to email you recently a couple times about my Perrin and Temperance sheaths from a while back, but I don't know if they got through to you. Could you update me on progress? It would be nice to get them by Christmas.

thanks,
Ken

The good news is I'm in for the G-10 SpyderHawk.

The bad news is I can only afford one SpyderHawk (the rest of my knife money is going into a Ronin) so I'm going to have to pass on the FRN version of the Spyderhawk. Hope there are still some FRN's around if the G-10 doesn't happen.

:D Fifty thousand. No less. :D

As noted in the original thread I'm in for a minimum of 5 units. Where and when do we need to send our checks?

I've got Sal making arrangements. Once Spyderco is organized we'll post instructions.

However, in the Forum Knife thread, one of the two choices is a PE Spyderhawk, correct? Therefore it should not be that far off a chance...

BTTT

We ain't going to get 500 sold unless we get a few more people to join us here. I only see 13 units spoken for... could Sal be right that this is a knife that nobody wants... I hope not! If the Forum knife is PE then maybe it would be possible to make some that way for those of you who "swing that way". I'm in for SpyderEdge all the way.

Well, I guess Sal did know best... (How could I have ever thought otherwise!!!) I can see that my dream of a "Super Harpy" done in G-10 is dead. While a few brave souls were willing to "dream the dream" with me it is clear that we can't pull support for the needed 500 units. :(

If you guys are up to waiting a couple of months, say Feb, I am in for 1 maybe 2. (But even I dont see how we can get 500, unless we get some dealers involved.) :(

I saw and held the FRN Spyderhawk tonight(Thanks Ron & Patsy). That is one cool curved blade. :)

I'm in for sure!
Even more so for a PE Carbon Fiber!

I want one of every variation Spyderhawk!!

Long live Spyderhawk!!

Well, I don't think that 500 is all that many. IMHO, the problem is not getting 500 sold. The problem is getting a few hundred people to come up with money for a product that does not yet exist - especially when the product probably won't exist.

I love the G-10 Harpy. It's in my top 3 knives of all time. I currently own two. If they started making them again, I'd probably buy 3 or 4 more. (The Merlin and SS Harpy really don't do it for me.) I also love the Civilian. But, the Harpy has a LOT of advantages over it, especially the fact that it can be used for utility purposes, like opening boxes.

I am very excited about the Spyderhawk. The Spyderhawk is right up there in the Civilian size range, but can actually be used for other, more common every day tasks.

FRN is a good start.

I think that there are a lot of applications where a hawkbill is superior to other designs, and that it can make a great EDC.

Just looking at how long various designs have been around (a good indicator of sales), Spyderco has done very well with various hawkbill designs. I.E. - Harpy/Merlin, Civilian, Matriarch, Cricket. So much so, that it continues to introduce new designs - the Spot, the S-bladed Meerkat, and now the Spyderhawk.

Instead of pushing for a rare, limited run of a GREAT design, I think that those of us wanting a G10 Spyderhawk should persue a different strategy.

My idea is to create a grassroots-type campaign to increase sales of the FRN Spyderhawk.

Spyderco produces variants of the best sellers (trainers, SS models, CF models, etc - just look at the Cricket or Police). Given enough demand, Spyderco will produce a G10 Spyderhawk.

To increase demand, become an advocate.
  • When someone asks "What edc?" on forums, suggest the Spyderhawk.
  • Answer "What are you carrying today" threads with "Spyderhawk"
  • Write positive reviews in the knife review section of the forums (not just BF - ALL the forums).
  • Try and get knife & gun magazines to do articles on the Spyderhawk.
  • Buy more Spyderhawks & get more dealers to carry them.
  • Get your local gun store/outdoor store to start carrying Spyderco.
  • Give them as gifts &/or show them to your friends.
  • Request videos on its martial arts use from your favorite instructor
  • Equip you commercial fishing fleet/business with them.
  • Recommend them to your friends in Law enforcement/the military/etc
In short, spread the word. A few motivated people can make a real difference. If Sal sees it in the bottom line, I'm sure he will become receptive to new variations.

I, for one, would rather buy a limited edition CF PE Spyderhawk to go with my G10 and FRN Spyderhawk collection, than be able to only buy one or two limited edition G10 Spyderhawks.

I will buy at least 2 FRN Spyderhawks in the next year.

If we try hard enough, we won't have to send Sal a check and wait. Instead, we'll be able to walk into the local knife store and buy one.

Just my $0.02. :)
