I walked into a local shop today, and had a chance to handle several Benchmade knives. Previously I was looking at the 940 osborne, but after getting a chance to see up close and handle some others, I'm totally confused. I looked at a 470 Emissary, 790 Subrosa, 890 Torrent, 950 Rift, 580 Barrage & Mini Barrage, and last but not least..... a William Henry B12-ZT. I would also like a CRK Sebenza 21 but have not had an opportunity to see one of those around here.

I am at a loss right now, and would love all of them, but only one can come home with me, which one would you choose? It will be an EDC for general use and work at the office.

I like their Osborne designs the best, the 940 is a great slim EDC, and the 810 is a great workhorse.

I have three Benchmades and like all three. From your list I have the Rift and it's the one that I have been carrying. It's a keeper.

I went with the Contego over the Rift, mainly for the M4 blade.

And because pics are fun, my Benchmades:

what knife is the 4th from the top?

As for Benchmades I just picked up the 940 and it's really a great EDC and you really won't go wrong with anything designed by Osborne.

I have a 741 onslaught and a 710D2 and they are both great knives. I had a chance to get a 940 at a good deal but bought a para2 instead. I love the para2, no doubt, but I still want a 940, so I'd suggest that. I think their Osborne designs, 940, 950, and the 810 contego looks great (deep carry, M4, and a glass breaker are all a plus for me). But I'd start with a 940, It's not as threatening as a 710 (or 741) and has a very practical blade shape. Also, I like the axis lock manual, I've never wanted anything faster, and they really are ambidextrous knives. but be careful, once you get one, you'll want 'em all:D

Honestly I would look at the Bone Collector. Handled one today and I just fell in love. Only reason I didn't come home with it because I couldn't decide between wood and micarta. I'll admit it's a knife I never gave a second look to but after handling it I'm impressed.

There are only 2 Benchmades I want. A 581 Barrage, and a 550 Griptilian in CPM-M4 with a thumbhole but I was told it doesn't exist. So from your list, it would be the 580.

I own 2 of the BMs on your list and I've handled a couple of the other too. Of the 6 BMs that I own, the 790 has received the most pocket time. Thin, super light weight, long blade and "office friendly attractive" are very appealing attributes, although I wish the thumstud would've been a bit more pronounced. Plus, it's a single sided thumstud, if that matters to you.

However, I seriously doubt that you'd be disappointed with whichever one you choose. Place them all on the counter, hold them again, work the action, pick the top 3 that feel the best, then choose which 1 of the 3 is most appealing to you. Buy it, then ask the salesman to place all the others face-down in the back, most dimly-lit side of the case...cause you'll be back for them later.:)

With BM's, I dont collect them anymore, so I consolidated down to three that I use: 556's, 710, 707. The more common models, I am plenty satisfied with them.

707 would make a fine office knife, I have mine clipless riding in the pocket with that microfiber BM cloth. All of them would make for a good edc. The three I own can be looked at as a "synergy", I can grab whichever works best for that given day.

I did, I got it really cheap from someone who hated it, I hated it, so I set out to kill time and try to make a usable knife out of it.

Why isn't the 707 on that list? Its one of the best folders out there IMO. But from your list I'd go with the black on black mini barrage, its built like a tank yet surprisingly light. The 470 is just too beautiful to make it a user so the 470 would be my second choice.

For around the Office to open letters ~~ best off with just a real good 'Letter Opener' I reckon -- makes sense to me anyway.!*
