Lets talk about butts

I was looking through my knives that made the cut to EDC and was wondering what they all had in common. After looking at them a bit it came to my attention that they all tapered off at the end of the handle. In other words they all had a skinny butt.

For example if you look at the pic below, these are all knives that I keep out for carry, depending on my mood. They all have skinny butts.

The same goes for this pic, though the JYD being a bit on the thick end of the spectrum, and the Rogue being an exception (but it doesn't get carried that much because of its size and being an auto).

I recently purchased a Gayle Bradley because of it's rave reviews but sold it because I just didn't like the handle. Not that it was too big to hold. I think what it is, is that smaller butts allow me to firmly wrap my pinky finger about it locking it in my hand. Then my index finger and thumb can be used more for control instead of grip. In case you're wondering how big my hands are I wear an XL work glove and some of those, depending on the style, can be a bit tight.

Probably nothing terribly insightful here, It was just something I got to thinking about. Feel free to add something or if you prefer to hold a rounder butt tell me why. :D

Eerr..umm... as long as the gender is correct, size doesn't matter?:p Oh, I see, not that kind of butt, .... sorry.

To quote one of the greatest poets of our time, Sir Mix-A-Lot:
"I like big butts and I cannot lie,
you other brothers can't deny"....

I tend to like a slight hook on the end of my knife handles.

For me it is much more important how comfortable a knife is for carrying. What I see in the ficture are knives of similar size and with flat handles. For me that is more important for EDC than a butt shape.
And for the same reason some of the knifes would never make into my EDC for being tooo heavy. Nice knives to have though.

It's more pronounced on large knives, especially those like the kukri, where retention becomes an issue. It can also become a liability, if the handle swells out in the rear. I know, I got a large, fast blister from a poorly designed handle on my smaller kukri. It took a trip to the grinder, and it works better, now.

The pommel can also be used as an impact tool, as shown above. Just wear the sheath low, or you'll get blunt impacted in the ribcage.
