So, I decided to grab MM stockman to tide me over until finding a gec 81 that I like. And I do love it. Already got a good edge and slight patina forming on the main. It's ground a little thick behind the edge but I got a decent example with minimal blade rub.

But now I keep seeing that 5 blade pop up. Man I like the thicker beefier main clip on it. I also just kinda like it! After carrying the 12 forum knife a few weeks (and still love it) the stockman feels light in the pocket. The 5 blade would not!

So. If you have one, what's your thoughts and experience with it? Would you part with it or trade it off if you could or do you like it too much?

And of course, pics never hurt.

It's the only modern 5-blade sowbelly with a punch (at least that I've seen) so it's sort of special. Some of the 100 year old sowbellies had a punch but most of the modern knives have a pen blade instead.

I'm surprised that your knife is thick behind the edge. Although some of Queen's stainless blades are thick, the examples of the 1095 steel Moore Maker 5-blade sowbelly knives that I've seen were all thinly ground... thinner than the clip blade on the sowbelly from Case. In contrast, the grinds on the Schatt & Morgan sowbellies are thicker. What year was your knife made? Can you post a photo looking directly down at the well with all the blades closed?

Thanks supra! Except mine is the 3 blade stockman that's a little thick. I'm considering picking up a 5. Blade.

Thanks for the information!

I gave my 81 stockman to a nice guy who returned the favor by giving me his 5 blade sow. He isn't very kind to his knives and its in pretty rough condition . I don't have any attachment to it at all except that it was a gift. It's a pocket potato .He has either lost or gifted the 81 ( guy literally would give the shirt off his back to anyone) .

Oh. A sowbelly is a type of stockman and I thought you already had one.

The thickness of the blades varies a lot among different sowbelly knives from Queen. The 5-blade Moore Maker is ground thin... the 2-blade Moore Maker has an average grind... the grind on the 4-blade Winchester is astonishingly thin... the 3-blade Winchester clip is a bit thicker than necessary but the other blades are normal (same goes for the 3-blade from Case). The grinds on the stainless sowbelly knives from Queen can vary a lot--often thick behind the edge and uneven... but that experience is mostly before the new ownership (only seen a few made afterwards).

For reference, the handle is 5/8" thick. It fits well in a hand. In a pocket, it's noticeable but not that bad. There are some Swiss army knives that are much thicker. During the winter, you could put it in a coat pocket.

Sorry I wasn't very clear on that.

Looks like I might have picked one up in a trade so I'll see. I like the fatter blade (from edge to spin) of it over the thinner stockman.

Thanks for the info super!
