Let's talk customized "Gentleman's" Emersons

Hey, I often have a need for a "Gentleman's" knife for THOSE occasions, but I hate to be without a knife that I can REALLY USE hard on any occasion, so I'm considering "Gentlemanizing" an Emerson or having one "Gentlemanized" for me.

I've done lots of custom work on Emersons in the past, but they were all full-sized buggers and still sort-of looked "tactical" when I was done with them.

SO...

I'm hoping to open a new can of worms here and talk about customizing one or some of the smaller (3" blade or so) Emersons for those occasions when a "Gentleman's" knife is appropriate, but when we still want a knife we can still USE HARD in a pinch.

[You know how it is... You're at a WEDDING... and then, all of a sudden the Zombie APOCALYPSE happens and you suddenly need a sturdy knife. You know how it is.]

maybe you could take a mini a100 and do a frame lock conversion with very deep carry (ala sog bend over clip) and replace the liner g10 with some sort of stabalized wood?

Im not sure what you really have in mind though. I like the idea of a spiffy'd up emerson knife that focuses more on the daily carry aspects while still having that hard use capability however.

I dont know about you, but if I personally was wearing a suit I would be able to hide a single stack pistol in there no problem, even though Im a pretty "medium" sized guy at 5'8". I dont know what sort of realistic hard use tasks you may be facing at a wedding, although crazy things happen and someone could be caught in rope or something so having a tough knife isnt such a bad idea. Again, you could just stick it in your waste band and while its true you will give up your wave you can have anything you want and no one will notice since your jacket will cover the clip.

I wear dress pants that are generally thinner or equivalent to suits exclusivley and even if I go packing one of my 4" folders (military and its giant handle included) no one has ever seemed to notice. If you are wearing a jacket then theres no way since the lower part will cover the print of the knife.

To clarify, I'm not talking about concealment. I'm talking about taking it out in front of people to use it for something and not freaking anyone out.

For example...
and this really happened...

I was just as a wedding that served steak and the caterer forgot the knives. Everyone at the table was asking for a knife and I couldn't take mine out because it was an Emerson CQC-10 and I didn't want to freak out these delicate people.

If I had, say, a mini A100 with burlwood handles and a jewled clip and blade, I could have taken it out and passed it around. See?

I've used my 10 and super 8 before in those kinds of settings. Just quietly open it, git 'r done, and put it away. Usually helps if you're carrying on a conversation while doing it. OTOH, I'd love to have a pimped out Emerson.

I see, thats actually an interesting situation. I think you made the right move by not pulling it out. maybe if it was your own wedding rofl.

I dont know dude, I think that people are just scared of things they arent used to and wouldnt be open to any sort of "larger" folding knife (which to most people is anything bigger than a swiss army knife), its just they might not be as unsettled as the afformentioned cqc-10.

I'd probably have to go for a mini-7a or mini A-100, both those knives could be dressed up
real nice, are small enough to look "safe" and still have enough grunt to get some things done.

I think its bolsters that make a knife look "friendly" all the bolstered knives I have get a far better reaction then the full G-10 ones do.
A frame lock with carbonfiber or some nice wood along with a Ti bolster seems to be a winning combo for looks and thoughness.

I would still have the AK down my trouser leg though :p:thumbup:

If you can PIMP a production Emerson with polished titanium bolsters and "Mother of Pearl" scales, then your talkin!!

Now that EKI is making stonewashed versions, it will almost look like a regular custom when done.

I'll be expecting a Super Raven B that will odds are go to Reese for a thick liner and bolsters treatment.

Mini A100 with desert ironwood scales, ano'd clip and hand satin finished blade.

I'm getting all tingly just thinking about it....:D

One of the mini's but truly....I think a CQC 6 would pass for gentleman knife and still be as rock solid as can be. At least it is gentleman like to me.

There was a MOP custom 100 on ebay for awhile and without a doubt the finest fancy custom Emerson I have seen. Highly polished blade, bolsters etc. it was nice and pricey too! keepem sharp

I think all you need to do is have good looking scales installed on a non black bladed Emerson. A smaller knife would be best, but a large knife is less threatening if it isn't black, olive drab, or camo. Even non knife people like good looking wood, or nice colors. I find people are less affraid of my large dog paws Sebenza than they are of my all black mini cqc7.
