We haven't been as excited about the Skeleton Keys as I had hoped we would be. The reason has been that the primary grind bevel geometry got a bit too thick too fast behind the edge due to the narrowness of the blade profile and the thickness of the stock when combined with our standard flat grind. Luckily, we have come up with a solution that has made us very, very happy!!!!
We have been deeply hollow grinding the Skeleton Keys with a 4 1/2" diameter wheel and putting an incredibly thin edge (.005" - .008") on them. The edge thickness before sharpening is approximately as thick as 1 - 2 sheets of typing paper!!!
In other words, these blades can cut you before they are sharpened! These little scalpels now look like nuclear straight razors.
The good news is that with the deeply hollow ground bevels, the Skeleton Keys really cut up a storm. The bad news is that we have to completely hand grind the blades in order to give them the deep dish hollow grind. So, where as we have been able to get great performance out of these handy little blades, it has cost us quite a bit more to make them. We are still working on coating vs. bead blast etc. . . I'll keep you informed. I'll also try to get some pics up ASAP.
