I have a few of the Tandy Line 24 snaps left in both brass and Nickle plated. Normally I use 8-10oz leather and the line 24 snaps work great. Will need to order more soon. Will probably also order some Line 20 snaps for when I work with 5-7oz leather. Are there other snaps that people like to use? If so, please tell us about them. Thanks,

Heber

Hi Heber. I use "segma snaps" for belts (they are small, unobtrusive, and are a very tight snap for their size), and sometimes I use "glove snaps" when a small snap with light retention is called for. I also have been using lots of "pull-the-dot" snaps recently. The pull-the-dots are the same size as a line 24 and work great for retention straps and other places where you want better retention than a line 24. The pull-the-dots only release when pulled in one direction, and conversely they only fasten when rolled on in the reverse direction of removal.

I use all different colors of snaps to coordinate with the color of the sheath, stitching, and the knife. Unfortunately I have not found a source of brass pull-the-dots (not even direct from the vendor). I buy pull-the-dots from http://dotfastenersdirect.com/ and other snaps I buy in bulk from Tandy.

When ordering pull-the-dot snaps you will most likely want the LONGest possible eyelets. Don't buy from sail-making companies because if they don't state the size you will most likely get shorties that won't work on anything but maybe calfskin.

Thanks Mike! :) Some good information. Lets here from others too please.

The Dot (Durable Dot) fasteners are rather versatile in what they produce. The post (eyelet) is available in several lengths that I am aware of--3/16, 1/4, and 5/16. There may be others, but I do not know. The sockets are also available in different retention strengths such as easy, moderate, and strong. The buttons (caps) are available in different colors and inscriptions on them. They are available in brass, brass/nickle plated, steel/nickle plated, steel/brass plated----stainless steel. Pull the dot, and lift the dot styles are also available. I do not feel that the 20 line snaps should be used on knife sheaths other than the flap type folder pouches. You probably should stay with the 24 line! Sandy
