I would like to see what all of you fine people over here in the traditional subforum think about the spyderco kiwi and bug series. Do you guys and girls feel they should be considered modern style slip joints or just a new take on a traditional knife. Or how about this.... would you put them with your traditional knives or modern folders?

It is not the lack of a lock which makes a knife traditional, but rather the design features. Holey blades and pocket clips are not traditional design features.

Um what about the spyderco kiwi in stag? slip joint design with stage scales? I believe this thread had merit where I originally posted it.... but whatever, your the boss.

The bug series? Cute little knives I see no puipose in having. Just fills a market niche, imo. As for the Kiwi, so it is for all wharncliffes. I despise them. Zero blade belly aint my cup of tea. Dumb design.

Great POCKET knives.

Depending on your dexterity.

Great steels with great Heat Treats with great geometry.

They are a great price point.

If you like them, great, if not, you could do worse with the same amount of dough.

I consider them modern because of the holey blade.

Different shaped blades for different jobs. Wharncliffes are great for draw cutting leather. All the downward force goes to the tip.

I picked up a stag kiwi cheap, and I like it. Not very traditional looking, but I'm not an Orthodox Traditionalist.

The thought has crossed my mind a time or two, but although I consider the Spydies certainly belong to the penknife category, I feel they are very very modern. That said, it ain't a bad thing and I'd love to see Spyderco make more!:cool:

By the way, I really dig the Kiwi... :)

I have an original bone kiwi and love it as a gentleman's folder, good for light tasks. I also have a newer "slip joint" version in stainless that loses way too much in convenience, being impossible to open one handed. If I have to use two hands I'll stick with a nice GEC or Canal Street traditional.
