I just sent the following letter to my local newspaper:

Dear Union News,

I am concerned about the recent trend in the media in which knives are being increasingly demonized and characterized as "weapons". For a working person such as myself a knife is an extremely useful and valuable tool used for countless everyday tasks such as opening boxes, cutting open plastic packaging, and cleaning my fingernails. It is the most ancient of mankind's tools and can be found in every kitchen. A growing number of people have jobs that don't seem to require a lot cutting and can't understand the basic need of others to carry a knife on their person. I say to them , take another look. Please let's make a distinction between everyday cutting tools and murder weapons. I would remind the skeptical that the vast majority of crimes committed with edged instruments are done with kitchen knives.

Great letter. If we wanted to all write our local paers with around 14,000 members or whatever it is now we could maybe get someone to listen....maybe.

Nice letter Peter! Keep us updated on it's (hoped for) publication. Maybe you can post a link.

I gotta get my a** in gear and write more letters. Sometimes it seems so futile...

Well written Peter! If you think it's odd that the media would jump on knives, Sarah Brady said that the gun laws here aid the terror folks....I don't remember them having a gun.

They really set me off this morning. I am so sick of seeing article after article about how they are taking these "weapons" away from school children. Most of the time they are nothing more than Leatherman Micras or slip joints. Weapons! Give me a break.

It is true however that stabbings occur on a daily basis. I really wish people wouldn't do that because it just keeps feeding the bad perceptions that the public at large seem to have towards knives. But I guess you can't stop that kind of violence very easily.

So I figure that at least I'm doing something and I urge everyone to do the same. As Amy says, it took all of five minutes and who knows, maybe it will get through to someone.....if I could get that message to just one single person I would be happy.
