Leuku or Woodsman? Or Duke?

Hello all,

I've read a similar thread with such comparisons, but I didn't exactly get what I needed... so here I am writing this:

I'm looking for a larger (5" and longer blade), robust Fiddleback for hiking and camping--I've narrowed it to the 2-3 above. The obvious choice, the Camp knife, is my last resort... and I'm not counting it out... but I wanted something with more of a point/ tip for more detailed work. That said, a robust spine and some steel down into the tip would be good.

I also like the fuller handles--I have a Sneaky Pete and a Bullfrog Bowie, and I've come to love the Bulldog's ergos better than any other knife I own. The Forager I had sported the most amazing blade, but the finer tip and thinner handle didn't suit these needs.

So, what do you think? And I'm totally addicted to tapered tangs.

Lastly... a pic to keep things interesting. A bigger one of these would be hard to resist--it's like a kukri and a bowie had a baby.

Really depends on what you camping duties are for the knife. I'm a fan of the duke for my needs, and the other two kind of suck.

OK, seriously all three are great examples of a 5" FF, but have different pros/cons based on you're needs. Fine detail work, Leuku>Woodsman>Duke, Chopping or breaking down wood, Duke>Woodsman>Leuku, fixing dinner Woodsman>Leuku>Duke. All depends on you're needs, but can't go wrong with either one.

The “the other two suck” line cracked me up!

Yep—my needs include fire prep, food, and whittling. The first two being more of what I do... lots of demos of all three for Cub Scouts.

I’m leaning towards the Woodsman. I’m guessing it can baton kindling? No sure, as the tip looks fine. I’d have a hatchet for heavy chopping.

I love my Duke, but the Woodsman always wins when deciding what to take. It is more versatile in my opinion than the other two. The only thing I like better than my woodsman is my clip point Duke but I dont baton with that one.

Thanks for the info, the Woodsman does seem pretty versatile--and agreed about clip points, I've used the Bullfrog to do just about everything with wood *except* batoning. If you have a minute, I'd love to take a peak at that clip point Duke... never seen one.

I dont have a photo hosting account for blade forums but I can post some pics up on facebook real quick if your on there?

For some reason I can take a live picture and upload but not upload a saved picture. After I saw this post earlier I pulled a bunch out to condition the wood handles so hear they are getting a bath.

I don't own a Duke but I do own and have used both the Leuku and the Woodsman. I'd have to go with the Woodsman for a camping knife. Especially when paired with a nice hatchet for chopping. I've used the Woodsman for both food prep and fire prep and it works great for both. I even felled two small birch trees and made walking staves out of them with the Woodsman. To be honest, I don't have much time in with the Leuku mainly because I always grab the Woodsman first. In the past I've actually made the statement that I'd EDC the Woodsman if it wouldn't freak people out in the grocery store. :D I hope this helps a little.

The Duke is really nice, and a better chopping tool than the other two in my opinion. But I don't do a lot of chopping with a blade that short these days anyway and I error on the side of pointy for lots of other utilitarian uses as well as other concepts, so I like the Woodsman best.

for a BIG knife the Pro-Duke would be my choice. However today I trust my skills with the my trusty Bush Hermit as it's a bit smaller and more nimble.

I’ve read some posts about your experience with the Woodsman—I found them compelling.

I looked long and hard at that! I’m kinda stuck on the tapered tangs and custom handles

Just to throw another in the mix- Big Sneaky.

I have and love the Duke, but I am going to try a Big Sneaky, just in case.

Big Sneaky was on my mind too. I have the Sneaky Pete and a bigger one would be a contender—but maybe without a super fine tip/swedge

100% correct, I pair my Duke with a FF Kephart, owing up to the fact that:
#1 I'll never just take one knife with me anywhere I can help it.
#2 I haven't found the perfect do it all knife, so each one compliments the other.
#3 Why have one knife when you can have more than one knife?

Obviously these three apply to handguns, rifles, motorcycles, pets, cars, and a whole bunch of other fun hobbies.
