I would like to expand my bookshelf on knives, esp. regarding folders. Which Bernard Levine titles should I look for?

Levine's Gude to Knives and there Values 4th Edition. The 4th edition is harder to come by and expensive. But I can't tell you how many 100's of times I have used it as a reference.

I absolutely agree with Campbell. I've used my 4th Ed. thousands of times. It's now the most beat up book i've ever owned.
Even after reading and re-reading all of it, i still always learn something new every time i open it up. It is very well written, but information dense. Perhaps it's best benefit is that it gives you a way to organize the vast field of knowledge that is 'knives' and thus better understand and retain this knowledge.
Don't try to save money by buying the 5th Ed. Bernard had nothing to do with it. Spend whatever will be required and buy the 4th Ed. If you truly have a passion for knives, you will never regret the cost.

Just curious---How much better is the 4th than the 3rd. I have a 3rd and would like to know if I really need to spend the extra for the 4th. Thanks.

Good question! I have the 1st Ed (1985). The 4th is scarce and expensive. I also was wondering how much of an upgrade it would be. Thanks!

If you search Levine's subforum, you'll find a lot of discussion about the differences between the different editions. I gave away two of the 4th edition but my own is copy is looking tattered from use.

...
#3 and #4 are about 1/3 different. $11 would be a good price for an unused #3.
#3 is a curio. #4 is a reference book.

BRL...

Where is the 4th ed to be found? I only see them on ebay, but at a handsome price.

Bernard Levine sometimes sells copies of LGIV that he autographs so you might email him also. I don't know the price or the specifics. If I recall correctly from prior discussions on Bladeforums, his original stock is gone but he picks them up when he finds them.

I have a few copies of Bernards books, one is an autographed copy of Levines guide #4 to Duncan of Clan Campbell !...and that is rather cool!
I also picked up a hard back copy of all about pocket knives by Bernard, I havent seen much reference to this book, bought it rather cheap, and one day it will make very good reading, as I havent had a chance to read it just yet!

I see the 4th fairly often for less than $50.00. I got one once for around $25.00. They never last for more than a few minutes. They get swalllowed up by a collector or resold on EBay for more money.
