Hello,

I'm looking for a new EDC. Not really concerned with the price. What I am looking for is:

  • Tanto
  • Coated/Black blade
  • Folder
  • 4"

What it is not:

  • Spyderco
  • CS recon 1

I have a recon1 now. The paint on the pocket clip, and the teflon have both rubbed off a severe amount. Makes the knife look ugly.

I am also looking for a decent sharpening kit, any suggestions?

Nice! I like that one, it's on the list.

I should also mention that assisted opening is a desire, not a necessity though.

Have you looked around at all for the folders?
Also, are you sure that you want a 4" blade? That's a whole lot of knife for a folder, and many folders don't come that large.
Price range?
Why a tanto point and coating? Other than the uber 1337 mall ninja factor, they're mostly useless.

This is probably the closest that you'll get (For $170) http://www.benchmade.com/products/product_detail.aspx?model=912 3.7" americanized tanto folder with asisted opening.
Or, for about $60 http://www.newgraham.com/detail.aspx?ID=4088
Or $80 http://www.newgraham.com/detail.aspx?ID=4077
$40 http://www.newgraham.com/detail.aspx?ID=4079

(the steels on the various M16s differ- do some researching before purchasing)

More tantos (most of them missing one thing or another according to your specs)

Check out the Tanto Kershaw Cyclone with the Black Tungsten DLC Coated Tactical Blade, also has the SpeedSafe On/Off switch. The blade is 3.75 inches.3

Or Better yet: The Zero Tolerance 0400 is my favorite Tactical Blade Can't go wrong for only $150.

Found someone, ordered!

Kinda funny, a place in toronto wouldn't sell it to me. Said law enforcement or military only.

If you can live with a 3 1/4" blade, the Emerson HD7 BT is pretty tough to beat.

why do so many people say tantos are useless. ive owned many blades and actually prefer my zt 0400 to my speed bump. im no "mall ninja" (i love the term though) but i do find the style of certain knives being judged as such to be quite eye catching and useable.

There's nothing really wrong about tantos.
It's just that they are optimized for piercing things and
usually not for cutting them. The secondary forward
edge reduces the overall cutting surface and the lack
of a belly makes it harder for certain types of cutting.
Also, they are usually a saber grind variant which reduces
overall cutting ability for thicker blades.

That being said, they can be made to be good cutters and perform
quite well. There's a lot of variation so writing them off alltogther
isn't helpful.
