I know this has been discussed several times before but not that I recall about this specifically. As I'm moving more this direction in the future Lord willing, I am starting to think about this. Turns out that State Farm won't cover me any longer if I'm manufacturing knives. It will be small production runs at first while I'm continuing to provide service work, but ultimately I would like to do production runs and customs in the future.

So, that being said, any recommendations on liability insurance companies that would cover manufacturing and knife production as a full time business (not a home based hobby)? I'm additionally looking into lawyer services to get set up on the legal side of things before making the initial move.

What kind of business are you classified as? Dba? Incorporated? How many employees? It also depends on what state you’re in. I use utica first through a broker. They cover small businesses.

I would recommend talking to a good accountant instead of a lawyer. When I went full blown legit as a landscaping company my accountant helped me incorporate my business name, as a S corp. From there I was able to obtain proper insurance and licensing. Set up a business bank account and file my taxes under corporate filing. All your income from the business, tax wise, should be filed as business income and then you pay yourself a salary.

Thanks so much for the input! I will contact my CPA - good idea! I'm an S-corp LLC and record all income as is proper for a full time business :)
