Took a trip to Maine to Liberty Tool and hunted around a few other shops. Liberty tool was a miss for axes but then I don't really need any :)

Picked up some nice pieces.

Brush axe. not sure if it has a maker's mark yet. I may have bought it primarily for the handle.

True Temper Tommy axe for $8

abused old Craftsman CT for $4.

Peavey (Oakland, ME) peavey with broken handle and spike, and a handle (found elsewhere).

misc. bastard files.

thanks for looking.

Peavey is marked on one side 2 1/2 Peavey No. 229. One the other: Peavey Mfg. Co., Oakland, Maine. Total outlay: $29.

handle cleaned up (purchased separately)

all together:

can't seem to get the brush hook off the handle. It appears to be epoxied.

Excellent job rehanging that peavey. I've got a newer Snow & Neally that's not nearly as nice as that one. They are incredibly handy tools.

Hi Coop,

Ha! Small World! The wife and I went to "Liberty Tool" Liberty Maine (which is about an hour from my home) as part of my Birthday/Vacation time off last weekend.

We also went to SearsMont and I had an awesome Rubine at :

Like you, NO Axes/Hatchets were to be found when I visited Liberty Tools. I did however find a neat lil' Imperial folding FISH KNIFE which cleaned up nicely and only cost me $1.25 for the knife. Coop, did you happen to check out the lil' Antique shope just down the road from "Liberty Tools" ? I found a nice 8 oz. Hatchet for nine dollars at this shop! Nice haul btw Coop!

Oops. Yeah I guess it is searsmont. The names just melt together when you're driving hundreds of miles. I had better luck there than in liberty. Not sure i wouldn't skip liberty next time around. I did check out the antique store - it's where I bought the peavey head.

Hi Coop,

Yea, I know what you mean about Liberty Tool. I too did better next door at the lil' Antique shop. I'm told the trick is that you have to be at Liberty Tool 7:30 a.m. SATURDAY morning when they unload the Van and stock the shelves.
I was very disapointed to see only one (lousy condition) Axe head at LT but went in the middle of the week when (no doubt) the "Pickers" got there first. Nevertheless, I had a good time.

That Peavey is a great looking tool but I think you might need a new bolt for it. That bolt looks small for the hole.

You east coast guys are lucky to have a bigger selection of vintage tools. There seems to be fewer in the West. Less people and they tend to hang onto things. It' cool to see some of the stuff you dig up back east.

Hi Coop,

I was in Belfast Maine today for the Celtic Fest http://www.mainecelticcelebration.com/ and later swung by Liberty Tool and that lil' Antique Shop again. Bummer! Nothing for me today. The lil' Antique Shop had another Peavey. I check out some Hatchets and Axes as well as some old Carbon Knives. I'm now so use to Flea Market's and Garage Sales, I can't bring myself to buy too much from the likes of Antique Shops unless it something really nice and unique (and not too expensive). I did well at a Flea Market and Garage Sale Saturday. I found a couple of nice Hatchets. One is a MILLERS FALLS (MA) and the other (unknown due to marking worn off). I hope to find something good later this week.

Regards,
HARDBALL
