Libricant under my bone scale.

I seem to have over lubricated one of my new Case knives. I noticed the next morning that there is a wet spot, (3/16" x just under 1") and a few very small spots that seem to be showing through the bone scale. The lubricant was Tri-Flow. It works wonders, but this is one of my favorite knives and I am wondering how to get it out. It seems to be moving, not growing, not shrinking, but it is moving and seems to be getting thinner. Is there something I should do to get it out. I was thinking leaving it in my car in the heat for a few days while I am working, or should I take a hair dryer to it. Pics to come but I was wondering what you guys thought.

Hi Matt, I dont think I would use heat at all, as forced heat may induce cracking of the scales..and heat only moves oil...it wont disperse......in fact what I would do is use a mix of very warm water-to the point of almost hot, and heaps of diswashing liquid ( although dishwashing liquid is harsh...not in this very immediate short term usage )..and give it a hell of a rinse out...I mean really make sure that soapy mixture gets in...if oil can...so can this.
Your next step is to rinse with very warm water only until all soap is gone-next is to immediately use compressed air in your garage or whatever, and blow the hell out of the knife ( carefully of course ) spend a carefull minute doing this...grab your WD40 soak the hang out of the joints only...work the knife...and then blow all WD40 out with air again....( this should take care of any water that may remain from your initial compressed air blow out)
Take her inside and carefully Mineral oil those joints my friend...sounds long and drawn out...but its only a 20 minute exercise...good luck.

so the soap and warm water wash and rinse will be the step that will displace the oil under the scales, and the other steps will be the steps to remove the warm water?

I had a celluloid knife in much the same way...yes..the soap is to remove the oil, the compressed air ( air gun in other words ) is used to remove the water, and the WD 40 is to remove any of the smallest traces of water in the joints...WD40 carefully, and Mineral oil carefully...it will work :)

I use warm water and dish washing liquid, never had an issue with it...I have a couple old knives where the celluloid has lifted a little and old oil tends to goop up in the gaps.

Sometimes if I use too much oil on a folding knife, I rest it spine down on a short stack of tissues. The tissues act as a wick and usually gets rid of most of the oil.

ETA - I use the same process for cleaning, most of the gunk comes out with the oil.

Duncan this took care of your celliluloid knife?

Hi Matt, yes, it did, mind you...I had to clean it because of the same reasons that you are worried about, I experienced a soakage between to scales, mind you I had left the knife soaking in a bath of mineral oil to loosen things up a wee bit-it worked a treat, the cleaning as well as the lubrication side of things as well.
The knife was gifted a while ago, and still goes strong, and looks great!
