Back in June, I made a trip I made with a friend from work to the the Lick Creek Range just outside of McCall, ID. We were hoping to make it to Loon Peak, but we turned back because there was too much snow. We planned to make another trip out there when the snow was gone. We planned to go this weekend about a month ago. I started looking at the weather in the latter part of this week and it was looking kinda iffy with chance of rain. We talked about it and decided we would try. When we got up there, it looked like the rain would come, so instead of pitching a tent, I elected to sleep in the back of my truck, which turned out to be a wise move. The sky opened up about 2:00 in the morning, with quite a bit of rain, and I was happy to be where I was, even though I had to share a relatively short bed with my lab.
When we got up, we thought we'd try to make the peak we were planning to climb, Sawtooth Peak. The clouds were high and looked like they may be breaking up. We made it about half way up a fairly steep trail to Snowslide Lake. When we got there, it started raining and it never let up. We decided to bag it. The guy I went with said "There's bold mountaineers and old mountaineers, but not many old, bold mountaineers". He explained that the rest of the trip was going to be a lot steeper and with it being wet, he didn't think we should risk it....and I appreciated that!
I did manage to get some decent photos of the hike up. I would have gotten more, but we were on a mission and didn't stop often on the way up.
Here's a shot from the trail. Even though most of the trees in the area are coniferous, there were enough deciduous bushes / underbrush that was changing with the cooler temps to make a nice colorful landscape.
Where there are no trees in this photo, that's just all granite. Beautiful imposing mountains in this area.
Here's Gary on the way up.
This is snowslide lake. This photo is cool because it looks almost symetrical with the tree in the middle and the mountains behind it. Even the colors are symetrical.
The dog had to be a ham and get in the photos.
Here's another shot of the lake. The mountain across the way went almost straight up.
Here's my obligatory knife photo for the forum. I spotted this mushroom / fungus on the way back down the mountain when it started raining pretty good. I threw my Safari Skinner in for scale. I thought it was pretty cool....
Anyway, it's the second time we made the Lick Creek Range and didn't make it to the top of the peak we wanted to reach. We are going to schedule another trip up there for probably next July, and hopefully then we'll make it to the top!
Enjoy
