Hello peeps.

I may be moving to the Reading PA area in the next month or so and wanted to see if anyone had some knowledge of the area. From what I've found already, it seems the city itself is in pretty sad shape. I'm going there for a job which luckily is in West Reading and is in an alright spot.

I'm not sure if there is an online resource somebody may be able to point me to or just some first hand experience. Trying to figure out where I may live while there.

Another thing is if there are any knife makers in the area too. Would be cool to visit a shop and see things done in person than just a video online.

The city of Reading is looking a little better than it did a few years ago but it's not a great city by any stretch of the imagination. The good part about it is that you don't have to get far out of the city to get a major improvement.Housing and the school systems in any off the areas surrounding Reading are pretty good and there are some nice and very historic areas. On the west side you would probably have to get out around Sinking Springs to see a major difference but that's a nice area.My kids have been down there with my ex for about 14yrs and it looks like at least one or two are figuring on staying in the area.My middle son is teaching at Conrad Weiser a few miles west of Sinking Springs and also is an assistant Jr High wrestling coach in the Wilson School district.

That was another point that I saw, that the city is getting better. Sinking springs seemed to be a nice area, though mostly houses. This is my first job out of college, so a condo/apartment is pretty much the only option. Saw some nice places in Mohnton which is only a few miles south of where I'd work that would be doable.

In all honesty, it seems things are pretty close together anyway, so any decent place outside of the city would be good.

Thanks for the info.

A short distance away is Hawk Mtn !! This is one of the best locations for observing migrating hawks in the fall. When you can see 1000-2000 hawks of one type in one day that's AWESOME !! Nice hiking in that area also !

I was always fond of Reading Railroad on the monopoly board. That is the best I can do since I was born and raised in California. Hawk Mtn. sounds like a great place to visit.

Mohnton is a nice area and your observations of everything being close together is right on and with the expressway finally finished through that area, you can be clear across town in about 10 minutes.I'm really not to sure about housing,Sinking Springs probably is mostly houses,on the south side of Sinking Springs,I believe the route number is 724,there used to be a couple of places with condos,I'm not sure about apartments and I think there are condos or apartments just south of there along rt222,they are still in the city limits but just barely and that's not to bad of an area.Just northeast of Sinking Springs, around Tulpehochen they've been doing a lot of developing in the past 10yrs or so,near the mall,I think it's the Bershire Mall, there should be housing around there.

Cabelas in Hamburg, up the road (an hour?).

Going there for the first time sometime soon.

Country Knives in Lancaster.

At least you'll have fun places to go.....

5 Forks of the Delaware gun & knife shows a year in Allentown
Flea markets in Kutztown, Leesport, & Adamstown
Mountainman gathering
Lehigh Valley Knife Show
EPKCA knife show
......keep your prioritys straight ;)

Oh Yeah, Hawk Mountain. Go up there, sit & rest on a rock when you finish with the above.

Wow. Thanks for the info. Things are looking a lot more promising now. Hawk Mountain seems like a great place to visit, lots of gun/knife shows and stores around. Country Knives looks like a dream come true lol.

Get a little outside Reading and you are really into some beautiful country.

You could head up to Pottsville one day and do the Yuengling Brewery tour. If you are into drag racing at all, Maplegrove Raceway is nice. Ed's Sport Shop in Tamaqua usually has some good deals on firearms and magazines. Hawk Mountain is highly recommended.

Woot. I am really excited about going out to Reading. Though there is still some work on the job end of things. Seems like there are a lot of things to do and see and overall just a place I want to be.

Will be nice to not only have a lot to see/do in a fairly close area, but also be close to or even in the country side.

I'm not sure if you're into mountain biking, but I was up there a few years ago for the Duryea Downhill race and man do they have some SICK trails.

The race itself was pretty fun too. Pretty decent turnout, cool people, live DJ, and all sorts of highspeed two-wheeled antics. It's held at some park that looked to be right in the middle of town.
