You should try living in the UK!
We are not allowed to carry *anything* that might be intended as some sort of weapon. We are absolutely not allowed to carry anything to defend ourselves with. We are not even allowed to carry a pocket knife with a locking blade without a provable, specific reason (like a specific job you are currently doing).
The police (probably at the order of government) like to have 'amnesties' where people can hand in their 'illegal weapons', usually some misguided people hand in such terrible items as antique, WWII knives and firearms. The government then say how well they are doing, 'look at all the weapons we've taken out of circulation.'
Needless to say, the criminals don't hand in theirs.
I remember years ago when Douglas Herd claimed that removing all firearms from private, licensed ownership would stop gun crime. He did it, and guess what? It made no difference. The criminals obviously didn't bother even applying for a license in the first place, and the licensed owners generally only shot theirs at the gun club. Trouble is, the sheeple believe the political hype.
The advice from the police should someone break into our home... We are to retreat to the furthest corner of the house/room and allow the intruder to do what they like. Only if they physically attack us are we then allowed to fight back, making sure that we do not use more force than they do. Then we will likely be prosecuted and sued, while the criminal's rights are protected for free by overpaid 'legal aid' solicitors.
I live on a relatively nice street, yet within less than 100 yards there have been two rapes and several muggings. I worry about my wife, who has to walk up the same dark path coming home from work.
The criminal element really seems quite fearless here. And why should they fear? Our 'goody goody' law system, run by the rich and well protected, seem bent on just slapping their wrists for anything but major theft. Only if they steal a lot from someone powerful are they really punished by the courts. Crimes against ordinary people are punished so lightly, if at all, that the offenders really don't care. If they get a little time in prison, they get to learn some new skills to use!
I used to teach in an EBD school for 11-16 year old boys. These were the types who had been expelled from every normal school in their areas. The attitudes I saw amongst the pupils there, obviously developed from parents and peers, were disgusting. Most of them were actively involved in assorted crime; car theft, drug dealing/abuse, burglery, mugging, etc. Many of them thought nothing of carrying knives and, as soon as they could get them, guns. Several came from well-known criminal families.
There attitude towards the police and law? Not interested; a joke. Future career prospects? Selling more expensive drugs, stealing more cars, working for their 'families/gangs' etc. We had several who were convicted of murder within a year or two of leaving us.
This is not just where I live, it is the whole country. The criminals are not afraid of the police, the courts, or the rest of the population, because they know they are not going to be hurt by any of them. If anything, they will be able to sue us! There was a recent case, settled out of court by the government for an undisclosed but very large sum of taxpayer money. Several convicted criminals sued the government for not providing them with illegal drugs while in prison! They refused a rehabilitation program, and just wanted their drugs. They claimed that denying them this was cruel punishment. I've paid for this with my taxes. I was disgusted beyond belief.
The most saddening thing as that, if we did carry and use a weapon of any sort in self defense, we almost certainly would be convicted in court by the sheeple. Not for defending ourselves as such, but for having the means to do so. Thanks to the government's programming that we must not have weapons. If we do, even for self-defense, we are evil.
Better get down off my soap box now.
By the way, I'm not really blaming the police for most of this. I'm sure they are more frustrated with 'the system' than I am. But then, they'd still quickly arrest me if I carried a defensive weapon, and the CPS would just as quickly have me in court for it.
Anyone in a more enlightened country want to give a job to an experienced science teacher and computer engineer, and a really experienced special needs teacher (my wife)???
