I picked up a sweet little black jack spring assisted folder the other day and now its got me looking at more assisted opening knives. Just wondering what the life is like on the spring in these and others?

Well, there are many different spring assisted designs out there, and each one has different areas of wear and different lifespans. I mostly have experience with Kershaw's Speedsafe technology, personally, so I can't speak to most other designs. Speedsafe torsion bars seem to have really sporadic lifespans, in my experience; they will generally last for months, but I've had a few that have snapped after mere weeks of use.

I aggree with dorito monk, different designs have different life spans. I have had Kershaw Speed Safe knives last years, and some only six months.
Benchmade probably has the strongest and longest lasting spring assist design.
SOGs coil spring will probably last a while.

Best thing about Kershaw is that after the spring breaks, the knife is still usable and Kershaw will send replacements for free, they are quick and easy to change.

kershaw advises ten thousand flicks...but give them a call and they will send you as many as you want.its a great company/

Yup. 10,000 cycles is what they test to. And you may have noticed some of their AOs fire harder than others. They tune each torsion bar to what they feel is optimum for the blade.

And if you ever call for a replacement bar, don't be surprised to find 3 or more in the envelope. And a new set of screws. And possibly a new clip. And in some occasions a little Torx kit. These guys have CS down to a science.
