In the south, we are issued knives at our birth and they put them in the casket when you go. If you don't have a pocket knife on you, the phrases "You ain't from around here are ya?" or "I don't know, but that boy just ain't right." will often be heard.

Growing up, I was never without one even at school. But in all those years (even a stint in the Army)I have never had occasion to need one in a defensive situation. Perhaps I lead a sheltered life, but Atlanta and New Orleans can be pretty rough areas. Has anyone ever had to use their knife for self-defense? (If you used it for offense, your lawyer advises you not to comment). If so, what was the outcome and what knife/knives were you using?

This is not meant to dredge up painful memories, but I am just curious.

BTW: The subject line was the newspaper copy they would never run. Along with "Life Saved By Lawfully Armed Citizen". Funny place this country

Yes, I have used for self-defense. I grew up on Chicago's south side. I spent much time in rough neighborhoods. I was out-numbered 3 to 1 on one ocassion so I thought it prudent to improve my chances. The outcome was the conflict came to an abrupt end. The threat of being sliced discouraged my detractors. This same situation ocurred many times over the years. I do bear scars from some conflicts but, by and large, I have found aggressors become much more reasonable when they are threatened with serious bodily harm. Reason is good!
