By "lifer" I mean 10 years on Bladeforums, or more. If you haven't been on here more than 10 years, kindly don't post. This should be interesting reading... Ok, now that the ONLY ground rule has been established, I'd like to ask the lifers who post here a few questions:

1. We all joined bladeforums in search of something. What were you searching for, and did you find the answer?

2. What was your favorite knife in your collection when you joined, and what is your favorite knife in your collection now?

3. We have seen the number of users on bladeforums grow at a pretty explosive rate. We have seen people come and go, get banned, pass away, etc. any thoughts on this? (Have things got better or worse in your opinion)

4. Has your taste in knives changed? (I'm almost positive they have, by this time) If they have, how have they changed? (What DID you like then, and now what DO you like?)

5. Are there any brands you are truly impressed with? (Yes, "I'm only impressed with customs" counts)

---------------------------

Answer as many or as few questions as you'd like. A simple "hey I'm still kickin', what's up man?" is fine! I just thought it would be interesting to see how things have changed for all of my fellow "lifers" out there.

I'll kick it off:

1. I was lurking on this site since December 1998. Believe it or not, I came here looking for the best knife for home defense. (LOL at myself!) I came to realize I didn't need a knife for that job. I was also personally told as a young pup that the best knife for home defense is a 12ga shotgun full of 00 buckshot, by the man himself, Jerry Fisk.

2. My favorite knife in my collection when I joined was my Ontario SP1 Marine Combat knife. The reason? That knife was practically the only one I had for years. It did everything for my family and I knife-wise. My favorite in my collection now is my Busse Basic 9. (Which I bought shortly BEFORE I joined bladeforums) The reason is not because it's my most used knife. It's simply because it's the one that makes me smile the most when I grab the handle... Mainly because when I do, I know I'm about to have some fun!

3. I've seen a lot of folks I genuinely cared about pass away. I've seen a lot of them get banned because they went off the rails. Do I miss them? Sure I do. That being said, I think every wave of new blood that comes in keeps the site (and our collective passion) alive and kicking. I'm happy to see all the new members. I hope they continue to be passionate and contribute and keep this awesome place thriving. Yes, sometimes I do tire of the "my lock failed when I tried to chop concrete with the spine!" Or "is my Spyderco fake because it came in a different color of plastic wrap inside the box?" threads... But, it's all good. They're noobs. They'll figure it out.

4. My taste in knives has changed several times. I got on here thinking I liked mainly folders! I much prefer fixed blades now. I went through a period where I didn't carry folders at all, but now I realize they have their place. I still like folders and still carry and use them, but fixed blades are my real passion. I also went from loving hollow ground thick blades to liking thinner full flat ground blades more. Knives are made to cut, and the ones that cut better work better. Who could've known, right?

5. Now I am mainly most impressed with custom knives. Most of my knives are customs. I do however like a few production brands: Busse and kin, ESEE, Emerson, Al Mar, KaBar (Beckers definitely included), Bark River, Strider, ZT/Kershaw, Microtech. I'm sure there are others, but I'm too worn out to think of them.

Answer as many or as few questions as you'd like. A simple "hey I'm still kickin', what's up man?" is fine! I just thought it would be interesting to see how things have changed for all of my fellow "lifers" out there.

1. I was actually in search of an place to learn more about knives and interact with others who had a common interest in knives.
2. I actually don't remember what my favorite was back then but I cannot ever remember not owning a Buck 110 and appreciating its form, function and value. I also respect the company and its heritage. Some stand out favorites along the way have been Chris Reeves' One-Piece Range knives, Busse knives and Emersons. The more my passion grew towards use rather than just collecting, Becker Knives became a forefront of my interests.
3. I really do not follow the drama, but by and large some of the "knicest" folk I have ever met has been in the knife community.
4. Anymore my tastes have shifted, believe it or not, to lower priced "users" that I can work the daylights out of without concern compared to much higher priced alternatives. As mentioned, I have grown passionate about Becker Knives and, as it relates to folders, I still like Emerson and have a bunch of them but there are so many value priced offerings of surprising quality out there these days compared to when I joined BF. Used to be a cheap folder was, well, a cheap folder. Anymore, cheap folders can be decent users that are fun to own.
5. The more I use my Beckers the more impressed I am with them. I have always been impressed with Chris Reeves' knives. And while steel snobs and knife snobs may smirk at this, I think that Kershaw puts out some very knice pieces for the price.

Thanks for your post, AntDog. Should be an interesting read of a thread. Salty, you and I have much it common it seems.

1. I too was really just searching for like minds, and boy, I found them. I figured something was wrong with me, a 26-year-old dude obsessed with knives (and with being a lead-guitar-playing rock star).

2. My favorite knife at that time I joined in '99 was the BM970 Emerson CQC7, soon to be replaced in 2000 or so by the BM710 Axis folder. Always liked those Axis folders. Started my lust in the late '80s with PC and BM Bali's.

3. Yep, seen folks come and go. Youngbloods and hotheads tend to burn quickly. I truly enjoy the knife maker interaction here -- you guys have always been like rock stars to me, and to interact with you here and at knife shows is simply awesome.

The one person in particular whose loss impacted me deeply was that of my friend Pete (forum name, "Ouch"). Pete and I became friends back in 2000 or so via the Benchmade company forum, and even though he lived across the country in NM, we'd meet up at the Blade Show and talk knives and drink Scotch. He'd fly out to stay with my family, and always brought gifts for my Wife and kids. Pete kept me grounded at times when I would want to dive head-first into the custom realm. There was a time when between he and I, we owned every production and custom Bali-Song USA, Pacific Cutlery, and Benchmade model ever made. When Pete died about five years ago, my interest in knives began to fade. A year or so passed with little to no forum participation on my part, but ultimately I looked around and you old timers (those that'll be likely posting in this thread) renewed my vigor. Part of me belongs here, and the only time I spend online other than work is usually here (for better or worse).

4. I've come full circle. I started out carrying production knives (Benchmades primarily), branched out into CRK's for ten years or so, owned high end customs, including a custom Emerson 6, a Terzoula ATCF with mokume bolsters and a damascus blade, custom bali's (still have some Loveless' I'm keeping for my kids or until I hit skid row), finally realized I had too much expensive stuff and needed to re-invest in my family, and worked my way back to productions. I'm outdoorsy, and use my knives like most of you do, and I like the readily-replaceable nature of production knives. I especially like the innovations that custom makers introduce that trickle down to production knives. I've always liked smaller, sub-3" bladed folders, and I've always liked the Axis lock. So currently I'm toting a small HK Axis folder -- BM's D2 is great, and this little folder is literally built like a tank. Truly underrated in my opinion. Today's production knives have so much to offer, in my opinion, it's difficult justifying beating on a custom (though I do thump on a Skookum when I'm hunting and camping).

5. Like Pete once said, "hell, I like 'em all." Though I tend to buy and use production knives, I'm always looking at customs. I, like many here, can tell who made the knife by the silhouette-shape, without seeing logos, etc. It's a sickness, one that I'll always endeavor to suffer from.

Professor.

1- I found this place looking for more info on my brand new Benchmade 555 Mini Grip. Stuck around and joined in last minutes of 2004, something like 11:55. That Benchmade has cost me 1,000,000,000.00 (USD) since then!
2- that would have been my fav. knife at the time. There have been MANY others since.
3- I have also watched members come and go and often think about them and what they may be doing now. I'm still here. I have always learned more from listening than talking (hence my low count). Right now I am enjoying the atmosphere of friendship here on Bladeforums.
4- My taste in knives hasn't changed much, still like the smaller ones. I have learned to try different blade shapes, not all blades need to be drop points with lots of belly.
5- I'm most impressed with to manufacturing side of knives. There is a wealth of different styles and shapes of product available to us right now.

*thanks for this post

PS Thank you, Spark, for giving us this wonderful playground back in the day. You revolutionized the industry with this forum as much as any knife maker has or can. You're a Lifer by default, Sir.

I've only been a member nine years but lurked for a couple before that.

1. I came here because the best stocked local knife shop was an Ace hardware. They did carry a good number of Buck knives and even some Benchmades. Fifty bucks for a knife meant having to save a couple months back then. The guy that came over from the paint section to show me knives wasn't exactly an expert, and Blade magazine articles weren't enough. I was looking for reviews and information other than manufacturers websites.

2. Old favorite, Buch FB 105 pathfinder. Current Spyderco Chaparral.

3. More people interested and buying knives means more manufacturers making different knives. When I was a kid, you could get the case patterns, buck patterns, or SAK, and that's about all as far as quality blades go. (I know Uncle Henry, etc.) The array of available patterns of quality knives toady is mind boggling compared to when I was starting out.

4. Most definitely my tastes in knives has changed. I am now more fully aware of ergonomics, blade steel, and cutting ability. (I like thinner blades)

5. I've had Chris Reeves in the past, but my preferred brand is Spyderco.

Grizz

Thank you all so much for your participation so far! Excellent reading for sure. I am very much enjoying it!
I recognize and remember every one of you and your contributions to this great place over the years. So far it's been a roll call of familiar names. :)
And I fully agree - Spark is the "OG" Lifer. It would make my day if he posted here! And that goes for any Lifer mods as well. You are all more than welcome, and encouraged to do so!

Been lurking since 2000, joined in 2004.

1. I was looking for basic information on knives, and sharpening. Sharpening has always been a mystery to me, especially straight razors. It seemed like every "expert" that I had asked had a different answer, and I came to find out that they simply stumbled on what worked best for them. Being a member here has really furthered my education in sharpening, steels, etc. I find the knife world fascinating, and always will. I wish I had become a metallurgist when I was younger....

2. My favorite knife at that time was my CS SRK or Trailmaster. They are still close to the top, but I'd really have to say my SAK Climber is my favorite and most useful knife. By a long shot. Even after all these years, the humble SAK is the one knife that is almost always in my pocket.

3. I think BF is better now, certainly less contentious than it used to be. It got pretty rowdy in the past, and I think it's more civil now, which I like.

4. My tastes haven't changed that much, I like most knives and designs. What I liked then I still do - that's the problem, I've got a bunch of knives to put on the for sale forum, and having a hard time bringing myself to do it. Believe it or not, I've never sold a knife. Yet. I'm going to try to make it happen this week, the number of knives I own is truly ridiculous, and it's time to get down to basics. It's been a fun collecting hobby, but when there's too much just laying around, stuff has gotta go.

5. Victorinox has been the brand that I admire the most. Every SAK I've owned has the same look, feel, walk, talk, etc., which is truly amazing considering the number of knives they produce every year. For non-custom knives, I still like CS for their willingness to innovate and try new things. I have also become very fond of Spyderco, a lot of their line would be a bargain at double the price. Plus, I like going to their showroom every now and then since they are only about 15 miles away.

Two custom makers that continually have stood out for me - for the last 10 years, longer for others - are Bob Dozier and Phil Wilson.

Dozier's knives (and I have a few) have always had perfect fit and finish, at least to my eye. I hold his knives as the standard by which I judge all others' fit and finish. Same goes for ergonomics. Now 10 years ago, D2 was higher on the list of edge holding steels. It hasn't dropped because it's somehow a worse steel, but there are just so many newer steels that will edge it out (pun intended). I'm as big a steel snob as anyone, but I still love D2, the edge is easy to sharpen, and it holds for a good long time for me. Unlike most, I prefer a highly polished edge on D2, I like the way it handles when I butcher hogs.

Phil's knives are also excellent fit and finish, and with his constant pushing the envelope on steels and geometry, his knives continue to be my top performers. I won't even quote the average time between sharpenings, because most people wouldn't believe me anyway...

1. I joined looking for general knife information. I found that and more.
2. My favorite was a buck 110. I still love the Bucks but my current favorites are CRK Sebenzas, large and small
3. The one that most effected me when he passed was Vampire Gerbil. I would search for his posts whenever signing on and I was shocked and dismayed by his early and grotesque passing.
4. My taste has stayed pretty much the same but fluctuates with different styles like big bowies or neck knives or traditionals.
5. CRK and Spyderco. Nearly all my non-traditionals are from these two makers. Their knives are great and the owners (especially Sal) are top notch.

I'll play along, been on board since the first week.

1. Believe it or not, BFC actually grew out of other groups, I started with rec.knives 20 years ago and followed Mike Tuber over here when he started the site.

2. My favorite knife I owned in 1998 was a BM AFCK with ATS-34 blade. My current favorite is the knife that replaced it that Christmas, a Large Sebenza in BG-42.

3. I guess what strikes me most looking back is the number of fine people I "met" on the forum that have passed away, collectors and makers alike. The most wonderful thing about this place is that I had a chance to get to know them at all.

4. My taste hasn't changed that much, just my abilities to afford what I like. I had just started to make a decent living where everything didn't have to go towards food and shelter when BFC started, so a lot of my suddenly "disposable" income went towards knives. I later bought a home and started a family, so there went any extra income.

5. I continue to be impressed with the quality and innovation of Chris Reeve Knives, as well as the variety, passion and spirit Spyderco and the Glesser Family bring to the Industry.

1). I've been here since 1998 or '99. My join date says Feb. 1999, but I thought it was earlier than that. My interest in knives had gotten rekindled in 1997, through some knife catalogs I got unsolicited in the mail. That's when I first heard of Spyderco, Benchmade, Kershaw, etc. When I first got onto the Internet, I looked for an information source on knives. I believe Bladeforums was the first site I ever joined, and still remains one of the few I belong to.

2). I'm not 100% certain which knife was my favorite at that exact time...probably my Benchmade AFCK with black blade and combo edge. Now, I'm not sure if I have a favorite EDC. I like and carry my Victorinox SAKs (which I long used before joining BF), and lately been using my FFG Delica 4 and Endura 4. I have a lot of different knives, but some have their time in the sun being EDC'd while some never do.

3). BF has always had its times of being more or less of a draw for me. In my first years here, I was almost addicted to BF. I came on all the time. I wanted to learn everything about knives. Then I've had long periods of absence away from BF, because at times I get burned out from it. I've always read FAR more than I post. I can't say if it's better or worse than when I started. I will say that back then, everything felt fresher because it was new. I never knew there were so many knife fans out there with so much knowledge. Quality-wise, there will always be quality posters/good people around, and the occasional troll now and then. These days I've started coming onto BF more than the last several years, but never as much as I did during the first few years. I check in for brief periods now and then.

4). My tastes have always included both traditional and modern knives...sometimes I favor one type over the other, but like both. When I first got liner locks, they were the "in" thing. I began favoring them over other locks. Then I got more into Axis locks, then into CRK. Nowadays, my favorite blade locks tend to be quality lock backs.

5). The brands that continue to impress me include Victorinox, CRK, Spyderco, and some others. I've come to truly respect and appreciate Victorinox even more, knowing how many knives they make per day at such high standards.

1. Don't remember looking for anything in particular just interested in knives.

2. A few favorites from back then were a Benchmade AFCK( that still rides in the center console of my truck), a Microtech Kestrel( which is in one of the pockets in my range bag) and a Kershaw Leek( early rainbow model that currently resides in my tool box out in the shop). Current favorite is the Zombie Tools Vakra that rides in my backpack.

3. It's sad when someone passes away, other comings and goings can be entertaining.

4. I'd like to pick up a Hinderer XM-18 wharncliffe but that's as much a reflection of how my tastes have stayed the same(wharncliffe style blades) as much as how they've changed( higher end, buy once cry once).

5. Nothing particular really grabs me. There's so much quality stuff out there these days, there's also a huge amount of junk too, do some research and buy what looks good to you.

Lurked for a while, then joined a year or so later.

1) Been a knife nut since I was a kid, came here to look at knives - all of them :)

2) Favorite knife when I joined was probably my Emerson CQC-7 I carried while in the Army. Favorite knife at this moment is my GEC Beer Scout in tortoiseshell acrylic.

3) No real thoughts on this. It's an internet forum & should always be changing.

4) Taste in knives has definitely changed. Use to be more into the tactical style knife, now I am more into traditional slipjoints & puukkos.

5) Lately I have been really impressed with the knives Great Eastern Cutlery is putting out. Still like my Spydercos, but Kershaw/ZT has also been impressing me a lot the last few years. Among custom makers Tom Krein always impresses me. This last BLADE I got a chance to handle some knives from Arno Bernard and hope to get one in the future.

I was amazed to find a place where people like me congregated. Until I found this place, I thought I was just sick and then I found out there were "others"....

1. More or less I was (and am) just interested in talking with other people who are as into knives as I am.

2. If memory serves, Rekat Sifu Bladeforums edition then, now...I don't really have any particular favorite that stands out above the others.

3. Not going to name names but yes I miss a few people that were regulars. Others, I was happy to watch have a meltdown/get banned and go.

4. Yes in several ways. The biggest change was that I was into collecting knives just to own them, now I've sold pretty much all of my collection and will only buy a knife that I'll regularly use. All my "safe queens" have been dumped--strangely I don't miss any of them.
Also, not into "tactical" knives at all anymore--moved to a state that has CHLs since I joined and no longer care about (or need to think about) carrying a knife for defense.
As far as features or materials, still feel the same way as when I joined.

5. Chris Reeve knives for production folders, Busse for fixed blades, Buck for value.

I joined sometime before 2000. At some point after that I slowed down for awhile and when I came back to the hobby I had lost my login info so I started a new account. One of these days I'm going to look through archived and try to find out who I used to be.

1. I've been interested in knives for a long time. On BF I could find people to talk to and lots of information to read.

2. My EDC folder back then was a full size Benchmade Leopard. I've bought a lot of knives since then but I still have the Leopard. I've bought a lot of knives since then, both custom fixed blades and production folders. Benchmade and Spydercos are still my favorite EDC brands. I have a lot of custom knives that I like from a variety of makers- Dozier, AG Russell's Morseth, D'Holder, Mayo, Murr, and a lot of less well known makers.

3. The forum is a lot busier these days. This is good if you are wanting to talk about things or read a lot.

4. My tastes haven't changed much but what I'm buying has changed. 15 years ago I was buying a lot of custom hunting knives. My tastes are still the same but I'm more interested in EDC folders these days. In other words I still like my custom knives I'm just not looking to buy more these days. I buy more EDC folders but with them I can carry and use them.

5. I still like some of the Benchmade models but I'm most impressed with modern Spyderco knives.

One thing I notice that has changed in the knife industry in 15+ years-
When I was buying custom knives I was buying the design, craftsmanship and hand work of a man with the skill to make fine knives. This was an honorable transaction with a man that I respected. Fast forward to current times and I find that the knife industry is full cutthroat with very little honor left. We see people making up stories on the sales forum in order to sell knives. Try to sell a knife for a decent price and all people want to do is lowball you. People sit at home in front of their computers trying to snatch limited production knives so they can turn around and sell them for large profit. It's just not like it used to be.

Thanks for the thread, I was just thinking about doing something similar in a poll and an old fogies of BFC thread.

Like many of you I've been here from the beginning, back when Mike Turber was at the helm and Kevin and him put this all together from the recknivesdotcom bulletin board days back in the early 90s when the knife site was just one long post.

Now to answer some questions.

1. We all joined bladeforums in search of something. What were you searching for, and did you find the answer?

I joined at a time when I was doing a lot of traveling for work and the internet was going crazy with information, everyday there was something new. I found recknives.com while overseas in Holland, I was looking for information on spots in Europe that might have knives. Then it was the emails back and forth with other people who were looking for me. Eventually I built up a decent network of friends and a decent library of catalogs ordered on line.

I've discussed knives with many of you over the years and many other subjects. With the inclusion of the two places we don't talk about outside those places some of us have had some heated conversations. ;)

2. What was your favorite knife in your collection when you joined, and what is your favorite knife in your collection now?

My favorite knife at time was probably my Black and Purple Benchmade 730 Ares or my BM Chris Carracci inspired AFCK.
Now after over 25 years of wanting a Sebenza, I finally have 2 they're my favourite now but like anyone who collects I have crop many to pick favorites.

3. We have seen the number of users on bladeforums grow at a pretty explosive rate. We have seen people come and go, get banned, pass away, etc. any thoughts on this? (Have things got better or worse in your opinion)

I'll miss Dave, the way he went was tragic, Vampiregerbil was one of a kind and I miss him and his humor everyday, all the makers we've lost over the years and the other members. This place is without a doubt the best the knife community has to offer. We have the best historians, experts, movers and shakers in the industry abound here, you can't swing a cat by the tail without hitting some famous knife personality somewhere.

4. Has your taste in knives changed? (I'm almost positive they have, by this time) If they have, how have they changed? (What DID you like then, and now what DO you like?)

Unfortunately or fortunately depending on how you look at it I've stayed pretty much the same, my only impulse period was the beginning of the tactical folder period. Everything I bought was quality so at least I didn't get caught up in the $19.99 wall hangers everyone was buying.

Now I accumulate with a more discerning eye, after 30+ years of accumulating I'd like to think I've learned something even if the only thing I learned was how to spot a quality blade. :)

5. Are there any brands you are truly impressed with? (Yes, "I'm only impressed with customs" counts),
I'm impressed with customs, Bud Nealy in particular, he was my first custom at the first ECCKS ,Busse/SwampRat and the old RAT Cutlery and last but not least, Sebenzas.

I consider many of you old timers/lifers as it were to be my friends and I hope to be talking knives way into the foreseeable future with you all.

I was looking for a folding prybar with an edge. I settled on the Buck/Strider 880 tanto.

2. What was your favorite knife in your collection when you joined, and what is your favorite knife in your collection now?

Cold Steel dagger Triple Action Folder. Now, Darrel Ralph custom AA-AXD.

3. We have seen the number of users on bladeforums grow at a pretty explosive rate. We have seen people come and go, get banned, pass away, etc. any thoughts on this? (Have things got better or worse in your opinion)

I don't think it's the forums that has changed... just my perception of the forums.

4. Has your taste in knives changed? (I'm almost positive they have, by this time) If they have, how have they changed? (What DID you like then, and now what DO you like?)

I was buying lots of $100-200 stuff. Now I know that I must pay much more to get my flag to full mast.

5. Are there any brands you are truly impressed with? (Yes, "I'm only impressed with customs" counts)

I'm only obsessed with customs.
---------------------------

Answer as many or as few questions as you'd like. A simple "hey I'm still kickin', what's up man?" is fine! I just thought it would be interesting to see how things have changed for all of my fellow "lifers" out there.

On a side note, I'd like to thank everyone for tolerating my presence. You have seen me go from 18 year old college student to soldier... from veteran on dope to sober knifemaker. Today I am proud to call you all my extended family and I'm blessed to contribute to my online household.

like some others i was a lurker/browser before becoming an active member. i guess "active" may be a misnomer as i don't post that much, averaging 3 per month over 14 years lol.

but, i've always been a knife lover. i carried a lot of swiss army, and gerber as a soldier and when i got out and got on the internet it was interesting to learn that there was more than just one type of stainless steel and the materials aspect fascinated me. i also loved the fine machining and precision of my benchmade 910, maybe my first higher end knife. the first time i opened it and the liner lock clacked into place it was kind of an aha moment for me. then it was on, searching for that one perfect blade.

my tastes have definitely changed. i was a big tanto/combo edge lover at first until i realized that they were not actually that great at the type of tasks i actually needed to do. i have grown to like longer blades as time has gone on and i do prefer a knife with some heft to it. i'm a recovering steel snob. so i've come from gerber gators and benchmade strykers to now i really love my 710, buck 110's, and the gayle bradley although my most carried right now is the 940-1.

i feel the past several years have really leveled the playing field and the differences in fit and finish are much smaller than they were. the stuff coming out of taiwan these days is phenomenal. it's truly a good time to be a knife knut
