I've gone full circle and recently "rediscovered" heavy-duty folding knives. One of the heaviest-duty production folders ever made was the Al Mar SERE 3003A, (original "Attack"), lockback. I just love this knife and am amazed how solid and heavy it is and how much I like it! I'm also amazed at how superior knives were that were made just 10-15 years ago from Seki City, Japan as compared to today. Double brass liners, full stainless backspacer and intregal bolster/handguard and on and on! I know the blade is "only" AUS-6 but it was a superior steel during those days and it's STILL a good, serviceable steel today.
When I received this big tank of a folder, (4" blade, 5 7/8" closed, 10" overall and about a pound in weight!), it came with the original Tex Shoemaker & Sons leather cameo cloth covered sheath. This sheath is quality but way too large and ungainly, (some will say just like the knife!). I carried this huge sucker loose in my back pocket but soon tired of that! I needed a good, thick, custom made leather belt sheath and immediately thought of my friend Dave.
I e-mailed Dave and and with info from his site: http://hometown.aol.com/lifter4him1/myhomepage/business.html
I told him what I wanted. I like sheaths, (like knives), that are simple but strong and are beautiful in their simplicity. We discussed it further and this is what he came up with. If this great brute of a knife ever could have a sheath that equalled or surpassed the knife itself, this is it! It's a right hand draw with a nice cant for easy withdrawal. Dave's sheaths are reasonable and a bargain! I'm sorry about the lousy scans and they don't even come close to showing the actual quality in real life. Thank you David!
