Lifting gouge in wooden knife handle

I recently purchased a Buck 110 with dark wooden handles. There are a couple small gouge marks in the wood handles. I was wondering if I can lift those with a wet rag and an electric iron on low heat. This would be the procedure they use for lifting a gouge in a rifle stock. I would use very low heat as not to get the rest of the knife very hot. These marks are very shallow. Any advice would be appreciated.

The technique you describe is for lifting, or raising a dent where the wood has been compressed. A gouge is generally understood to mean an area where wood has been removed, as in cut away.

I do not think the steam method will take care of a cut, but it ought to help with a compression dent. A dent will have a smooth surface at the depression and a true gouge will generally be rough.

Try it and see. They are probably dents.

If you just bought it, wouldn't it be worth the time to exchange it rather than to spend the time trying to fix it, gambling on the results?

If it is a cut and cannot be lifted, you could fill the cut with CA adhesive and polish it smooth. Cyanoacrylates work great for fixing flaws in wood.
