Light-my-fire FireSteel

Hey Guys..

If you are going to get a Firesteel,, go with the larger one,, always...

The Army model is an excellent Firesteel and will last many years if taken care of...

They sort of rust, they get a weird black powdery coating on them. ALsmost like they start to disintegrate (sp?) It takes a while though, but it you're gonna store it for a while, put a quick coating of clear nail polish on it.

I cut a peice of 3/8" clear tubing and keep it slid on it as a protective sleeve. Works very nice.

Hey Guys...

Although the plastic sleeve will work to a certain degree, the cluprit with the corrosion of the ferrocerium is moisture and oxygen.

You need a physical barrier to protect the ferrocerium from exposure. Over the short term, it's niot going to be a problem. I use my rods all the time,, and keep a constant eye on them.. The ones I don't use I paint..

If you aren't going to use your ferro rods for a long period of time, you should also paint them with shellac, nail poilish or Minwax and create a barrier ...
