So I stopped into REI yesterday to finish up my christmas shopping and saw this new fire steel from light my fire.
The fire steel itself is larger than a scout but Im pretty sure it's slightly smaller than an army model.
The striker is what really got my attention, it's relatively compact while still allowing a very secure purchase due to the thumb scallop you can see in the first picture. What I didn't notice right away was the built in whistle.
I took it outside to give it a try, that sucker works! Very load with a short breath.
Next was the function test. I wanted to see if the striker would work to make fatwood shavings.
That was about 5 seconds worth of scraping, enough to get a fire started with dry kindling.
Next I tried it on some jute twine as I keep some in a small zip loc bag.
That's about 2" worth all fluffed up, and lit right up with a short slow scrape
This is a pretty cool piece of kit. It's not my first firesteel, but it's my first dedicated striker. Im pretty pleased with it, the ability to have two tools in one is always good. Oh, the striker throws massive sparks from a going gear or firesteel.com steel as well.
