I was thinking of getting one of these to throw in the EDC bag.

Anyone had any experience with them?

Are they butane or lighter fluid powered, difficult to be sure from the pic.

Aside from these, any other suggestions for a hard use reliable lighters are welcome.

I would definitely prefer something that runs on lighter fluid like a zippo. Yes, I've heard all the arguments for butane but I'm a pig headed old fart and I happen to like spilling lighter fluid on my clothes and food. :)

I dont have that one but I have the windmill trekker which is butane and that ones is also butane.

so far really good, great flame and reliable

OK, thanks. Pity about the butane, do you know of any similar lighters powered by lighter fluid?

Back when I was a smoker I used to use one of these. I could light a cigarette while going down the road on my motorcycle! Mine was an older version and didn't have the clear fuel window, but the butane lasted me a couple of weeks of 2-pack a day smoking. When I later switched to a different lighter (a gift of the same design) and put this one away, I happened on it about two years later and it was still able to pump out a flame.

I have had a few windmills and IMO they are just not worth the money.
The one you linked to is actually the only one that still works out the 3 I have had, but it's really not that great.

The small 2/3 Zippos are handy wee lighters for keeping in a pack as are the little peanut lighters.
It's also worth getting one of the small fluid viles to take with you on those extended trips to the pub so you don't have to carry a full sized "can" of lighter fluid.

Zippos are pretty darn good in the wind. Way back when I had a Zippo pipe lighter. I seem to remember that it was extremely windproof and perfect for lighting fires with it's different chimney design.

I have a couple, they are butane fueled, and are very reliable for the pack, however for an everyday lighter thier igniter coil wire is weak and will break away after continued use. Which lessons the reliability of the lighter they stop working...

Fluid lighters go with the time proven wind resistent Zippo. However there are some issues If the striker wheel gets wet it will not work until it becomes dry.Same for the wick and packing if you/it falls into water it will also need to be refueled after it drys. The fluid will also evaporate from the lighter as it sits waiting to be used..

If you over fill the packing no problem it will wick and dry away, however if its in your pocket as it does this the fluid is gonna leave a painfull rasberry on your leg..

The windmill and brunton lighters have a tough time at high elevations and in very cold weather due to the butane.

If you're really old school as you say, get a good old brushed chrome Zippo.
There is available a special fuel storage container for the liquid fuel.
There's a reason why Zippos have been around all this time! :)

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I already have a Zippo, great lighter to be sure but I was just looking around for something a little different, no big deal and I don't smoke, I just like to have some form of fire making magic box with me wherever I am.

Light my fire? I thought you were talking about one of these. :o
