Looks like the bk11s have been getting some love on the boards lately, so I figured I'd chime in.

I recently snagged 2 camillus bk11 blanks off the exchange for a decent price. I figured heck it'd be a fun project down the road to tinker with with little investment, no rush.

They arrived high sabre with a nice polish on the secondary bevel, but needing some edge and tip work. Hey, thats half the fun right!

So, I was looking with these laying on the table and was trying to let them talk to me to tell me what they wanted...stripped? micarta? wood? kydex? leather? cord wrap? plain vinegar? mustard? etching? It was nice to just have something that I didnt have to rush to complete, and not have a ton of emotion built into it like my beloved bk16 or bk62 and afraid to tarnish it or have it out of comission for any length of time.

So, there I was looking at them. I also ordered one set of micarta just to see how they looked/fit in the hand. I'll also note these were my first small beckers. I had a decent 3.5 finger grip, felt good in hand, and the micarta looked nice. So at this point I'm thinking maybe one micarta and one ttw wood? Then it came to me...

We camp a lot, around 7-9day stretches around 3 times a year, as well as general outdoor time and hikes in the woods with my soon to be 11 and 12 year old daughters.. (the oldest of which I taught to throw one of my bk16s on our last trip, she was sticking it in no time :) it got dinged up a little, but its some good looking wear!). What would be better than making these bk11s for their first knives. Birthdays coming up soon. I could let them pick their colors and dye them together, and pick kydex colors and send em off to Al. They have been asking for their own for awhile now, and I could leave the tips not so pointy for the time being. Now that's a fun project involving them as well...something they wouldnt forget, and a heck of a birthday present! Boom!

I am/was pretty surprised at this revelation because its not often that I get a great idea...and hey...never hurts to have a couple little beckerheads running around.....ahem...."girls...no running without kydex"...lol...ahh I can hear it now!

Not a good idea at all. These knives are too hard to be thrown, not what they're designed for. It will break eventually. Throwing knives are heat treated to be softer.

That the golden rule. KaBars new thrower seems to have 1095cv with the same heat treat ? Kinda strange .

Camillus Bk-11... blanks?
As in not heat-treated? Those should be D2.
Wow, you got me thinking . It's weird that they have a smooth coating . Do you think its possible that these could be D2? I have never heard of an 11 being made with that steel but it they do seem pretty dang hard and the tiny little nick in the paint on one that have there is no sign of any rust :) is there an easy way to tell the difference between 1095 and D2. I have about 6 hours trying to get the edges right they still need work

Sad I know but they are slowly getting there o_O

:p, I have a coarse in coming :D
Yeah man, I thought the fine stone was fast until I started using the c/xc. I fixed a bk9 that had a secondary bevel 90% to the right on the belly portion...its back to center now. Still took 2hrs on xtra coarse. Its really nice once you break it in.

Btw, since we're on the subject, has anyone tried dmt xfine. Ive tried 3, issues with all of them. I now just go from fine with lightest pressure to ceramic or diamond paste strop.
