Lighter for EDC

I am looking for a good lighter to EDC. Something that is compact enough for, and will stand up to, constant pocket carry with high reliability. I am not interested in anything so expensive that it would bother me to lose it. I have had disposables bleed off fuel over time and have never been confident of their durability. All suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,

The tiny capsule lighters are cool-- if you don't use a lighter very often. They don't hold much fuel, and it would be a pain to screw and unscrew the cap each time if you used it often. They sure are good for those who only occasionally need a lighter, though.

The Z-Plus inserts for Zippo lighters can be had for $10 or under. You'd also need to get a donor Zippo lighter, though. That will be another $15. The Z-plus inserts have a good reputation. Not sure about you price range, but I would feel bad if I lost mine.

Cabela's has their Xtreme lighter on sale for 20 bucks right now. These work great in all conditions including wind. Cheaper Than Dirt sells a similar type for 9.99 and Sportsmans Guide sells one with built in compass and led light for 14.99.

Ah, I envy you guys with your torch lighters. I've got several of them, including a Zippo Blu and an insert for a regular Zippo, and they just don't work at altitude. I can be at anywhere from about 6,000 to 14,000 feet on a fairly regular basis, and the only thing that's reliable for me is a cheapo, disposable Bic lighter. Oh well.

If you're looking for "cheap" then I would recommend a Blazer PB-207. I feel its one of the most reliable lighters under $300. You can get it for around $30 (I got mine with a friend, there was a site selling them 2 for $50). It lights almost every time on the first try and if not, then will on the second try. It's very durable (although the plastic will get scratched when carried but thats the same for all plastic lighters). There's the coolness factor too. Not only is it a torch, but theres a side switch that'll keep the lighter lit without you pressing on the button. Very useful for if you're doing something like lighting something with the lighter sideways, you won't burn your finger since you can keep them away from the heat. It's also very fuel efficient. Since I'm not a cigarette smoker one filling will last me several months. It is kinda big though. More rounded than slim.

Around $100 I would recommend an IM Corona lighters (old boy or classico series). It's what I'm using now (replaced my Blazer for EDC) and I don't regret spending the money on it. Soft flame on this one though. As reliable as the Blazer, classy looking, and much slimmer than the Blazer. But if you're worried about losing it then I wouldn't recommend it.

Get a Zippo. They work everywhere.

Is this going to be a "tool" lighter or a "cigarette" lighter?

I am a big fan of Zippo lighters; I carry an old-fashioned stainless steel Zippo advertising lighter engraved with the company information of my family business (BRM) on it. It's served me well and I believe Zippos can be had for a pretty low sum if you search for a good deal---not as cheap as the one-dollar Wal Mart Bics, but I really enjoy them functionally and aesthetically.

My lighter today, inspired by Dalton.

Zippos aren't the greatest if you're not a smoker or other heavy user of a lighter. The fluid evaporates fairly quickly whether you use it regularly or not. A rubber inner tube band around the seam helps considerably, but still doesn't stop it completely.

There's another zippo insert I've come across (and own) which uses butane as the Z plus does but produces a flame which resembles the original fluid based one. I carry around a brass zippo every day with this insert (I'm not a smoker, so this is my "tool" lighter for various occasions) and it has helped me save a tonne of money for how long the butane lasts in storage.

I bought it from these folks here.

I'd love one of County Comm's stainless mini-lighters but I don't want to pay $8 to ship an $11 small & durable item. Anyone ordering from them then can help me out?

I' ve had great success with the Z Plus insert housed in my Ti Zippo. I' m not a smoker. I use it for other daily needs. And always keep it as a primary daily carry. And yes, there is a cool factor as well. :) I wish Zippo had a Jr. Ti model!

Another vote for the venerable PB-207. Mine's going on 12 years and still strong. Contains a massive amount of fuel compared to the z-plus, and the flame is longer.

I bought mine at the same time as two of my buddies. All three are still operational and we've probably refueled them dozens of times each.

i got a 3 dollar ronson jet light its awesome. its not picky when it comes to lighter fluid and works great. its metal too so it pretty bomb proof. and its under 5 bucks. also my edc lighter is a blazer pocket torch. it holds a ton of fluid and it has a feature were you can lock it on so you can use it continuously without a problem

This recommendation is a little pricey, but they are good lighters. Take a look at the IM Corona brand. I have an old boy and it is a fantastic lighter. My only complaint is the wind resistance, or lack there of. Another plus is the lifetime warranty and the classy look.

What about the Dupont lighters? What is the draw? Why so pricey?
