Hey dudes, just wondering what lighters you guys choose to carry in the outdoors. I have ferro rods and matches as backups in my psk/camp kit but I need a good lighter for when I need a flame NOW.
I was looking at Zippos, both the classic and the Blu line. My only concern is the fuel evaporation on the classic. On the plus side, it could be used as a candle, something other lighters don't do so well. Bics have failed me.
I need something small I can carry in my pocket.
Thanks in advance.

I have had a Zippo and a Zippo fuel canister in my possibles bag since forever. The canister is still full to the brim of lighter fluid vecause it is sealed with o'rings. For the added $10, it is invaluable to have. It will fill a Zippo almost twice and is made from machined aluminum. This is what they are...

I quit smoking 3 years ago, but a Zippo, if you don't feel like using a flint/steel or ferro rod, is the way to go. Never fails...just keep a spare flint beneath the insert. :D

Mini bic, all the time. In fact, I'm down to one, so it's time to get some more. Whenever I see a package of orange mini bics at the checkout, I buy them.

Brunton makes some nice lighters designed for the outdoors, but they are pricey, and quite a bit larger than a mini Bic.

As I smoke cigars, I carry a Xikar butane with adjustable flame. Costs a little more but guaranteed for life. I had to return one last year and they sent me a new one, no problem.

I have a peanut lighter in my altoids tin PSK.
I keep a mini-bic in both the packs i use for hiking.

I've got a Chinese peanut lighter clone from Deal Extreme on my keychain.
Quality isn't as good as the real deal, but it works and is less than 1/3 the price.
I haven't had it long enough to see if it holds fuel forever like the real deal, but as long as the o-ring doesn't degrade theres no reason it shouldn't. :)

The old WWII trick for Zippos is to slide a piece of bicycle innertube over the case. Keeps the fuel inside, also keeps the Zippo from sliding around in (or out of) your pocket. BiCs seem to keep their fuel forever, but if there is a leak, you have a potentially explosive situation. That's why they are banned in some workplaces.

I wonder how well that actually works.

I carry a mini bic. I tried the peanut lighter from county comm but never could get the thing to take a spark from the wheel so I tossed it. Thinking about going to zippos again.

I have the waterproof Brunton with the screw on cap. It works well and holds fluid forever. Its my backup. In my pocket I carry a Windmill made lighter. They make the lighters for Cabela's etc. It is not waterproof but is VERY handy day in and day out.

I'm going to do the Ranger band thing on a Zippo and see how that works. Zippos are great and provide other options. Sparks without fuel...maybe useable. They can burn on various fuels. Rebuildable.

I got one of the butane piezoelectric ignition weatherproof jobs when i was in Alaska that I carry in my fanny pack, and usually have BICs or a Zippo in there (backpack) somewhere. I guess I'm not as particular about lighters.

A good option I've been thinking about is one of those designed for pipe smokers as it is sideways and most of the time it"s easier to light a fire holding a lighter sideways I guess.
Lately we practice with a firesteel so I couldn't tell you when we used a lighter last.

The cheap electric spark ones keep goin ever if the get dunked. Just shake it and it will light again. No flint to dry out. Usually carry classic zippo with me anyways. One of those butane jet flame ones may work for you, about same price as zippo. Also there is the old trench lighters too

I wish Zippo would make a larger version of a peanut lighter. Kinda like a Kaschie lighter with O-rings.

Are you listening Zippo developers?:D

+1 Zippo. Carry some spare fuel if you like, but it's the best lighter I've ever used.
