As I am slowly over-hauling & updating my Day/SAR/Fastpack, I spent some bucks on some modern fire starting gear: Windmill Delta butane lighter! No pics of it in action yet, but I can easy see how these little gems can be addictive.

Would love to see pics of your super-lighters if you got 'em!

I buy dollar store three packs and put them everywhere, in the vehicle, in packs, in pocket. I figure that one or two at least of the unopened three pack will work. Actually, I can't remember any of those cheapo lighters not working. And I tend to yank them out to light the portable bbq at the lake etc.

I keep a few of them around. I just wanted something wind-proof. I'll use it for more than just backpacking. One doesn't spend $30 on a cool gadget and not play with it!

I flic my bic
or the thres cheap ones in the hardware store

I love Zippos
BUT they are NEVER good to go, they always dry out and cannot be in a BOB

Bic Clic mini here. Nothing fancy.
I must have a few dozen kicking around.
I like the fact it works when wet.

I'd say a Zippo can make it into a B.O.B., as long as the needed fluid goes along with it...:)

I tried leaving a Zippo in my hiking pack
I would get somewhere and want to light a stove.
I did not want to have to carry lighter fluid and fill the lighter

I just Flic my Bic

I don't know if you have CLIPPERS over there... but here in Spain I like them much better than BIC ligthers. They can be refilled AND have the sparky bits replaced (small ferro rods)

I have a little peanut capsule lighter as a backup for my main fire setup or sometimes as a keychain item. It uses the same fuel as a Zippo but it doesn't have the problem of drying out because it's sealed with a rubber o-ring, which also makes it waterproof.

Oh and Clippers seem to be the European equivalent of the Bic, they're solid lighters and just as ubiquitous there as Bics are in North America. I had friends bring me some, still got a few laying around, still in working condition.

edit: And since it's a pic thread:

Clippers and Bics are both common here. Clippers being more used among people who smoke their own rolled cigs or joints... due to the fact that the striker (and flint storage rod) is removable and can be used easily to press down the tobbacco (or whatever you wanna smoke!). I don't smoke at all but I find the CLippers to be easier to handle with cold hands since their body is more cilindrical (Bics are oval/flat). You can also get them with a ruberized coating which prevents slippage! I have two like that... one is yellow and another is black.

I always carry a few (as well as my partners) when we go out climbing and plan on using a stove.

Hmm, now I gotta ask people to bring me some more Clippers, or maybe I can buy them on the big Bay site in bulk... And for Bics I made a few sheaths for them out of Kydex, something I can attach to my knife or carry on my neck or belt.

I have Bics (normal and minis) with the safety cover on the flint removed (helps with lighting) and the button locked up with a zip tie in every vehicle, bag, junk drawer, etc.. I also have a pretty healthy number of Ronson Jetlite butane lighters as well. Refillable, hot flame, very reliable, and a better choice if you like the occasional cigar. :) I mod the Jetlite to remove the child safety lock (takes about 5 minutes) and stash them everywhere. Available at Walgreens as well as Walmart.

They do dry out. But carry a little fluid with you and you're good to go. It can always be used to "help" your tinder pile take off too.

I like that it will stay lit with no hands. Set it on the gound or a log, and hold your tinder bundle over it. Heat rises and off you go.
