Question:

I carry a small black bic lighter right now, because it's "Small" & super light. I want something as small that is also butane, refillable, blueflame torch like, & under $100. Help?!

Thanks,

Ryan

Go to any Gander Moutain or other sporting goods store and look around the sale-counters...I found that many sell small hinge-topped Colibri 'torch' lighters with their names on them for $15-20. I have a Windwill Delta and one of these 'cheap' ones...I use the cheap one more because it is nicer to carry (much smaller). I have been carrying my cheapy for about 1 year...the store logo has wore off...but it has never failed me... If you can't find anything like this at a local store, try REI. They sell both Windmills ($45) and Colibris ($30-100)... Based on your stated needs, I would suggest this one:

from REI, unless you find one locally.

I found this ... anyone had one before? Not a torch, but looks to be very zippo like. Dalvey Mini Lighter.

Rigor, I like that lighter ... is the hinge plastic?

Rigor, I like that lighter ... is the hinge plastic?

Yes...I believe so. The one I have is not exactly like the one pictures...but both my cheapy Colibri and my Windmill Delta have plastic hinges...and both have proven to be quite durable.

I guess they have a torch model one as well, only 2-1/8" in Diam.

$70 :( Think I still might have to buy one though.

Ohhhh the solo storm, I just order the storm, the metal storm, and the lazer. They look like really good lighters and they are super cheap. Now I am lighter crazy ... cripes!!!! Knives, then flashlights, then watches, now lighters ... what next. :D

Thanks Rigor,

Ryan

PS. I am sure it will be pens, I know it for sure!!!

I really like my KGM Vector Gear. It looks just like any other jet lighter, but it operates on about half the butane. Endurance is a useful thing in survival situations, not to mention a convenience the rest of the time. :)

The absolute wickedest butane lighters are the Blazers! They're available for less than $30 at many of the cigar dealers.
Actually, they were originally intended as soldering torches and the company saw that people were using them on their cigars. I've owned several of them and also some of the Colibri and other brand butane jet lighters. If you want a lighter that will last a long time, stay away from the piezoelectric/butane jet lighters. They'll work great for a few months, then they just die. The best of the bunch is IM Corona. Very nicely made, but expensive.
If you hang out at the cigar forums for a while, you'll learn all about lighters.
Zippo and Zippo style lighters are the only lighters that will outlast you. Phenomenal bang for the buck!

Hi Lenny...thanks for the tip about the cigar forum...I smoke a pipe, not cigars, but I am sure others there do too. I agree with your sentiments about Zippos...I have an old brass one with the USMC emblem engraved on it that I bought when I first joined the Corps...it will surely outlast me. However, it does impart a lighter-fluid flavor to my tobacco. I have never had a problem with my electric-piezo lighters - but I also never carry only one means of fire in the wilderness or other times when fire is critical. Thanks for your comments!

Has anyone tried a Blazer CG-001? They appear to have the same flame as the traditional Blazer torch, but in a shape more like a traditional lighter. I'm curious, but all the dealers I've found who carry them are in Europe.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I did some looking around on the links you listed. I finally found one I really liked, even though it wasn't one of your suggestions. I found it on Yahoo shopping for $31.45. It's a Colibri Viper. I really like the look of it. I've been toying with the idea of buying a butane lighter for a few weeks now. I'm pretty tired of the standard issue colored plastic Bic lighter, and I don't like the oily taste that Zippo's impart in a cigarette, so I thought I'd give butane a try. It took some research, but I think I'm happy with my final choice.

Their description: Colibri Viper Silver polished and Silver Lighter. This lighter's high-tech look and SST ignition system create a perfect all around lighting instrument. One step action opens the protective cap and ignites the flame.

Can someone educate me on the SST ignition system they're referring to? It's new to me, but I'd like to know more.

I've owned those cheap lighters Ryan, they all die on me. Of course that might be because I got drunk and decided to melt a penny with one.

I carry a Zippo for my smoking needs. IMHO, nothing says America like a Zippo lighter... especially a dinged up brass one.

Most definitely. I'm a real MGS fan, hence my username. If you want a copy, I can Email you one. I only have it in Danger, no Evasion, Caution or Jamming.
