Lightfoot LCC vs Microtech LCC

I'm nibbling at the thought of buying a Lightfoot LCC, specially since there are a few for sale here on the forum and also the Guild Show will be in Orlando in less than two weeks and Mr Lightfoot will be at that show.
I have both the d/a and m/a versions of the Microtech LCC, and I can't imagine another version of the LCC actually being better.. they are that nice.
They open smooth as silk (m/a is actually faster to get them open than the bolster release - the bolster release on the d/a is just fun)and lock up rock solid.
The Lightfoot version does not *look* much different than the Microtech version.
Any thoughts on what makes a Lightwood LCC worth the extra $?

The MT LCC is a very nice factory produced knife. (I actually own a couple). I would not call the mechanisims on the factory "smooth as silk", but that is relative to experience of the knives that have been handled.

The Lightfoot is a hand made knife of the same design.
You will be amazed at the difference once you handle a Lightfoot. Look for things such as the position of the blade between the liners.
Compare the smoothness. Feel the transition on the handles from material to material.

The difference in price is relative to the efforts involved in producing a hand-made version. For some folks the difference is worth it, for others it is not.

I just bought an LCC Carbon Fiber manual action today and love its heft and fast opening. It was born just about a year ago. I chose the carbon fiber over the micarta, even though micarta is more "collectible", due to the secure puchase the carbon fiber affords. Got an excellent price from a local knife dealer. Fast opener; might I say a safe fast opener; excellent purchase on the stud for thumb and ring finger openings. The wide blade helps prevent slippage accidents.

The custom version I have not seen, but folks should know that even though Microtech's are amazing quality production knives, the "real" handmade LCC has got to be better - but in the way that requires delving into the details.

I, for one, support the custom knife community with some decent purchases. But getting an MT LLC "gets you there" if you don't have the funds for the "real thing." The MT LCC is still one heck of a knife with quality head and shoulders above the normal production knife.

Words of Wisdom :D

It's my understanding that the custom LCC is smaller than the Microtech version...anyway, here are some reasons to get the custom version :)

Those are mighty fine reasons, RL!

Good to see a Canadian really supporting a fellow Canadian. :)

In that triple picture of Lightfoot LCCs,do you know what the scales are in the top picture?
Bone? Ivory?
Looks pretty,for sure........
Anyway, I am now awaiting a Lightfoot LCC I bought in the customs folder here, and looking forward to it :)
have been trying to not buy a knife for a few months, and maybe try to grab a Nate Clark custom - they are probably the prettiest knives I have seen anywhere.
But sheesh... I keep finding stuff I want along the way.
Stupid lotto tickets I get *never* win..... <sigh>

here are the specs from Bob Neal's website:

LCC
Blade Length:: 3"
Overall Length:: 7-1/8"
Closed Length:: 4-1/8"
Blade Steel:: ATS-34
Handle Material:: Walrus ivory
Bolster/Guard:: Titanium
Sheath Description:: Zippered pouch

Congrats on your purchase...

Yes, I tend to buy other knives while I am waiting for my customs to arrive :rolleyes:

As for the lotto...I have a strategy...I purposely buy losing tickets so I can drive the prize money up...then when it hits a nice round number (like $20 million), I go for the kill :)

Ahem ... Which one is Greg and which one is RL?

btw - Are the custom LLC's more rounded out on the handle than the production models? My MT LCC can be painful a little when grabbed in a death grip tightness.

thanks

I'm holding my folder...Greg is holding his new Hog Hunter (in reverse grip)

Recently there has been an interesting discussion on the german sister of Bladeforums, the Messerforum, about the custom knives of Mr. Lightfoot. For those who can read german, it's here:

http://www.messerforum.net/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7018

In this thread, the comments of those who own or owned a Lightfoot custom were pretty rude. If you believe those guys, fit and finish of all knives ranged from not sufficient to catastrophic. If this is true (and you may ask any of the commenting members, as the email adresses are all there), we have to state that Mr. Lightfoot either sends all the defect and bad stuff over the pond and keeps the good knives for the american continent or the quality of those knives is or was not that consistent.

I want to point out that i personally have no opinion about the custom knives of Mr. lightfoot and that i did not comment on those knives, but i found it important to show you a different point of view of some owners.

I DO own a MT L.C.C. and it is one of the best, maybe THE best, production knives i ever owned.

I have owned several Lightfoot custom knives, and still own two, and I have another on order from Greg now. I have nothing but high regard for the quality of work that he produces. His actios are some of the smoothest that I have ever handled or owned. If you have the chance and have the money to buy one, by all means do so. You will not be disappointed.

I would not post anything bad about a custum maker's knife without contacting them first to fix it--IF it appeared to be an aberration. I returned my custom LCC made by Greg as soon as I got it because it had a fatal design flaw (a flaw shared by MT's factory version BTW). Fatal is perhaps not the right word, because it is hard to bleed to death from a cut to the finger, however, one can sustain permanent nerve damage.

The problem? The closed blade/stop location and handle gap conspired to leave the tip of the blade where one could inadvertantly slip their finger between the liners and slice it. I did this on a factory LCC, so when I saw that Greg's had the same problem I returned it.

This was a year and a half ago, so it is possible he has corrected this.

The Custom LCC is WAY smaller than the MT LCC. It is about the size of a mini socom or a bit bigger than a UDT. LCC is a monster compared with it. Both are nice knives, but the MT is more bang for the buck.

Greg will make the LCC the same size as that of the MT model, but it costs more.
