I just moved into a townhouse, and for some reason, they installed ceiling lights in only 3 rooms. Just to give you an idea.. The living room and kitchen are separated by a bar type area, and there are two windows in the living room facing the back yard. Some light comes over from the kitchen when the light is on, but not too much.So basically, I'm looking for some low cost ways I can improve the lighting in the home (mainly the living room) without having 4 or 5 lamps in one room. Any ideas?

Use halogen floor or wall lamps in the 300 to 500 watt range depending on room size & layout. a 500 watt in the center of a 20X20 room with a 8-9 foot ceiling & you could read in a corner facing the wall.

Floor standing Halogens put out a ton of light but, they get very hot. I replaced mine with High Power Flourescent lights. Splitting a pair of 300W flourescents on either side of a sofa will provide a lot of light without heating up the room.
