Lightly Modified BK9 & Fire

So I took a file to the spine and removed the jimping/thumb humb in order to get a good hard 90 for a fire steel and I just like the flat back BK9s.

I also shot a short video in near zero temps for a separate project for fire lighting with just feather sticks and shavings. The modified spine throws an INSANE amount of molten gobs of goodness.

Planning a stripping party this weekend.

To see the heavy sparks being thrown you'd have to see that part of the video.

Nice video and excellent mod...

the only bad thing was that music, it made my want to get drunk and beat my wife and then sleep with my dog....;)

Lol, that cracked me up. I enjoyed the song without any of those urges, though I'm not married....

Great video and mod. Being able to use the knife as a striker like that has to be great.

slick editing on that video  if i may suggest one thing, make the font on the text larger next time. i had a little hard time reading it while looking at the squared spine. my 32 yr old eyes aren't as good as they used to be :o

i'm not married yet either but it doesn't take much for me to have an urge to get drunk :p

I really like the idea of moving the firesteel back and keeping the knife stationary

yup, it's a good firesteel technique. it prevents you from knocking away your tinder with the knife/striker.

Very nice! Thanks for posting--I hadn't seen that technique for using a firesteel either (though it sounds like that is the proper way), so thank you for teaching me something new!

Nice skill set there, Smokin' Onion, loves me some firesteel action. Squaring off the spin is the first mod I do to a knife. Corners failures, yada, yada, I like striking steel with that big dude of mine. Loves me some 9.

what gloves might you be wearing?

I bought them several years back before Sportsman's Warehouse closed their retail store here in Minnesota. Elk, double stitched and they've lasted really well. I'm not kind to gloves and they've taken all my tasks in stride. Cabela's has them on sale at the moment. Better price than what I paid for them.

Best gloves I've used. I hit them with a sealant and they workout well waterproofed.

That ramp looks cool, but I have huge hands and the ramp is too close to the handle for me. I may take it off too.
