Hi,

My birthday is next week and so I went to the local Wal-Mart in search of a birthday present. After looking at different knives such as Gerber EZ-Out, Kershaw Chive, and a couple of Schrades I settled on a Buck Lightning model 170FX. It has a somewhat serrated blade, the handle is slightly over 3", and the blade is 2.5". I love the look and the feel of this knife so much I can't stop playing with it. I saw a 110 also, but the Lightning is more my style. This is my first liner lock and my first aluminum handle and I love both. This knife is cool! Now a question: is the blade ATS-34 or another kind of steel? Thaks,

S.

I believe that the steel is 420HC. The only knives with anything else is the ones for PCKS and the Buck/Striders. Some of the special production models do also use diffrent steel-types.

But in my book the 420HC is a very good steel which compares well to high-grade steels:D.

Buck makes a very nice product, in fact most of my collection came from Buck.

Welcome,Spill...
Itook a look through the 2001 and 2002 catalogs and Buck makes the HTA II with a 3" blade, partially serrated in ATS-34 and a Carbon Fiber handle (2001) and same blade with a gold annodized handle for 2002.:)
hope this helps, take care

Spill,
Welcome to the Forums!! Although a Lightning is available with ATS-34, your knife should be 420HC. New for this year is the 176GD with a gold anodized aluminum handle and the ATS-34, as mentioned. It is one sweet knife! By the way, if you get a knife from Buck with ATS-34 or BG-42 steel, it will usually be so stated on the blade. There are exceptions to this rule, but this generally holds true.
