Lightweight Calypso Jr. is no lightweight!

I relented today and got a Calypso Lightweight Jr. in that killer VG10 steel.
The edge on this knife is like something out of a horror movie. It's terrifying... easily sharp enough to do surgery. I almost cut myself doing my standard edge check. This knife will cut at the slightest touch out of the box. Most knives I get will shave out of the box. This one is beyond shaving sharp. The horror...the horror...
For a lightweight, relatively inexpensive knife, this one has a lot of very nice features:
1.Reversible clip with METAL inserts for the clip's screws.
2.A very thoughtful choke-up area on the ricasso.
3.The opening hole is fully exposed.
4.The clip is black with that gold Spyder.

5.A good choil to keep those pinkies off that scalpel-like blade.
6.The texture on the handle is fish scale patterned. Grippy and quite cool. The ergos are great, the knife is comfy in the hand
7.A lanyard hole!
8.A needle like point that begs to pick splinters.
9.That VG10 steel blade. The fine edge one is capable of acheiving with this steel just blows my boat right out of the water!
10.The lock is strong and tight! The knife opens easily and locks up with a loud CLACK!

Well, Spyderco has done it again!
Yet another one hit right out of the park!

Congrats Sal!

Welcome to the club, misque. I got mine Saturday. Sharpest knife out of the box I've ever purchased. I'm right with you on every point of your review. This is a tremendous product. Sal, my hat is off to you.

Misque, take a look at the swedge along the top of your blade and tell me if it's centered. On mine it's off to the side a bit, the only thing I wish were different. A slight and merely cosmetic problem, true, but still something of a nag. (I realize this is really nit-picky.)

As a matter of fact, mine is off center a tad.
Purely cosmetic though.
It's a little off to the left at the base of the swedge and moves to the right out to the tip.
Since it will be a user and will never affect the performance of the knife, it won't be a bother.
If the knife was going into the collection, however, I'd probably want to look at some more a little more carefully.
This one has a home in the work pants pocket for now and a second home in the weekend fanny-pack.
It's a definate keeper!

Is this carried tip up or down? I don't believe I've seen any pictures of the light weight, but I'll go searching.

cerulean,

It is tip down and you can find pictures on James Mattis' website, www.chaicutlery.com

Cerulean, wander on over to Chai Cutlery, Mr. Mattis has got some great pics, including this one. The knife is carried tip down. Bought one a few weeks ago as a present, gave it away this weekend, and I think I may have to get another -- it's quite nice.

A good choil to keep those pinkies off that scalpel-like blade

Probably my only complaint (I do that a lot anyway). The blade is VERY sharp, but the choil's not as nicely pronounced as on the Native. My Calypso Jr Ltwt is a blow-em-away slicer, but I'd hate to use it under stress where my finger might slip on the choil.

The design of the handle has the clip mounted near the tang end, but if it were mounted on the butt end instead, maybe they could've increased the definition of the choil. My $.02

Gold spiders and black fish scales... this guy is very biomorphic
