Is this amount of edge damage normal when just cutting cardboard, paper and plastic?

I've never used that steel, but I have quite a few Spydercos in various steels and none of them have displayed this kind of wear.

Yeah, I bought this knife here a couple of years ago from what I believe was the original purchaser and recently decided to make it my everyday carry. I’ve never seen a knife’s edge fall apart doing so little. I guess there could be some fatigued steel that may need to be sharpened out……but this just seems off.

Sometimes you have to sharpen a knife a few times to get to the "good" steel. At this point that's about all you can do and see if it continues. Or reach out to Spyderco and ask if this is expected, they may replace the blade if the heat treat of that batch was off?

Yep, that’s what I plan to do. All I have is a Spyderco Sharpemaker so it will be a bit tedious but hopefully that fixes it.

If it is a factory edge.
Not normal.

It has already been sharpened.
Hit it on a Sharpmaker and enjoy life

What you see is the second edge. The factory edge did the same thing as this one, so sharpen all the chips out and it’s doing it again. I have owned over at least 200 knives and have never seen this before. I’ll try sharpening it again and see if it improves.

I have quite a few Spyderco’s (my favorite folders), but none in that steel. I have only heard good things about the 4V. Sure seems like a fluke (or a fake). I would definitely get in touch with Spyderco. Best of luck.

This is an old exclusive from years ago and I bought a secondhand so I doubt Spiderco would do anything about it. I’m not that worried, just seeing if anyone else has had any problems with this particular steal from Spyderco.

I searched to see if anyone was having issues, and there are some threads you may find interesting. Seems like angle of sharpening may be a recurrent theme.
I always wonder when a knife is secondhand, if the previous owner may have used a machine- sharpener or a sharpening service which can over heat the edge.
If Sal sees your post, I am sure he will comment.
