Lightweight Police

I know this was up some time ago and everyone turned against it, thinking the Police was that special model that wasn´t supposed to be for everyone. However It has to be pointed out that a lightweight Police probably would be a big seller on the world market. Let´s hear, Forumites. Any second opinions? Sal?

While the Military seems to have replaced the Police as the Spydie "flagship," I still feel that the Police model should not go liteweight. It already comes in a light and grippy G-10 version that fills this role without downgrading the knife to Zytel. I feel that a far better alternative would be a Zytel version of the full-sized Calypso, which may otherwise be headed for early retirement.

I agree with Corduroy! A zytel Calypso would be hot! Especially if the VG-10 steel was used. I like my old SS Police...

I understand that many forumites have a feeling that certain models, Police, Military etc, are "specials" that make us knife-nuts stand out from the crowd. The Endura, pour example, is actually more practical than the Police but is considered a bread and butter knife due to the zytel handle. My point is that the Police might see more use in the field if it was Lightweight and thereby more economical. A knife like the Police deserves to be used and used hard. When my Endura breaks I just regrind it if possible and when it´s beyond salvage it goes into the dustbin and gets replaced by a new one. I wish I could have it that way with the Police as well.
Maybe there ought to be a "Special Police". Calypso blade (VG-10) with a Rescue handle..?
Maybe I should present this to Sal on another thread?

Pelle - The LEOs are leaning to the smaller knives. The Endura and especially the Delica.

The tendency for LEOs to want the larger knives (4" blades) are more the the guys (& gals) that have or are interested in more blade use training. The Massad Ayoob design (due out in early Y2K) has the larger 4" blade because of the segment of the LEO that has interest.

Police in Europe are now being restricted to smaller blade lengths as well.

For what sort of work (or damage) would a lightweight Police be more suitable than an Endura?

Of course, if the lightweight Calypso Jr., with its ambidextrous tip-down clip setup, is a success, maybe the next step would be a "full size" Calypso, also with tip-down carry.

Why do we need the Police at all when we have the Endura 2...? Why do we need the Starmate when we have the Military. It´s not my intention to be rude. I just ask you and I ask myself the same question. You got me there.

Different strokes for different folks?

Also, I think tip-down carry is a must in anything with enough weight to "drop" it. Love the drop.

Pelle - the Endura II uses AUS-6 steel. it is designed to be a "less espensive" steel handled model.

The Militry and Starmate share materials, lock design and factory but the two designs are from different designers and are designed for different purposes.

Would a tip-down lightweight (FRN) lockback Police have enough weight in the handle for a reliable drop-down opening? I suppose weight could be added at the butt end if necessary. I rather like the G10 Police as a solid knife, easily opened, with a non-slip handle.

I'm having a bear of a time (pun intended) getting my G-10 Police loose enough to drop without having to shake it too vigorously. Weight is an issue, but so is action. My girlfriend got a Calypso Jr. with the best action I have ever seen on a production lockback and that drops just fine. Similarly, I've never had trouble dropping a well-tuned linerlock (even a few without holes if I'm careful) because they have such light actions.

I'm guessing a Zytel Police-sized folder wouldn't be much lighter than the G-10. If it had a light action, the drop would be no problem.

My point was that there might be a market for a less costly Police. We all understand that G-10 is better than zytel.

Rolling lock Military, then the Keating Chinook, followed by the Native Chief and Papoose, and now the Ayoob Police! Sal, I am starting to keep count as there seems to be a plethora of future models to be had. Perhaps there should be a section on the website that keeps us up to date on the ongoing developments of future models.

Nakano - There is. Here. Most of the stuff that I mention here is in early stages of development. Too early for pictures. Too many changes occurring before final design.

It was my opinion that ELU interested in Spyderco enough to visit a Spyderco forum would probably be interested in what the R&D group was doing. Occasionally questions on Spyderco philosophies and postions come in, but most seem to be interested in areas relating to new models & materials.

Also, our Website person is currently heading up the Spyderco Factory Outlet Store project and changes are currently being made there.
