Thank you both. The Lignum Vitae is tough. Its not that bad you just have to keep cleaning the belts as they load up. On the plus side it polishes easy, it cuts easier than Micarta.

Can I ask a couple of other questions about it? I bought some from a local wood supplier. the blocks he had were greenish on the outside, which I was told was natural oxidation. after cutting of course it is gone. Is there a way to get it back? (I love the color)

and have you noticed the wonderful smell of lignum vitae?

and what's the other name for it? I can't remember off hand but apparently the "genuine" stuff is harder to find. I hear it is so hard that they used to use it as billy clubs in britian.

Not sure on the color, I purchased a matching set of scales from Sheffields in FL. I thought I would give it a try. I beleive it is more common than the wood dealers would lead us to beleive. If its rarer it's more expensive thing.

To get the greenish color back you would need to attach and grind the scales and set the knife aside to regain the grren oxidized patina before sealing. You might also experimanet with using some type of green tinted pickling type stain.

Great knife. I love lignum Vitae becasue this wood comes better with aging.
