Right. With 76.2 mm canon with 100 rounds of ammo, of which 19 were AP, 53 HE, the rest was shrapnell. 2 7.62 mm machineguns, with 35 drum mags (65 round). Later it was equipped with 85 mm main gun.
The T-34 was designed to deflect Panzer 88mm rounds and using its larger cannon (cant remember size) kill'em where they stood,
Actually not. In 1941 when Hitler attacked USSR Germans simply didn't have any tanks with such large caliber guns.
T-34 could withstand german infantry standard 37mm anti tank canon AP projectiles on the distances over 300m, from 200-300m penetrators simply stuck in the armour plate. Only on the distances below 100m 37mm guns were effective.
I guess 88mm gun that you mentioned is 88mm German anti aricraft gun, which was the only thing that could deal with T-34 and even with heavier KV tanks(along with the JU-87 stuka dive bomber), although anti tank warfare was not its primary design.
it also was equipped with larger treds than most tanks of the time to deal with the mud of the Russian spring.
Yup. And diesel engine, which provided much better survivability on the battlefield compared to gasoline engine powered tanks.
First implementation in battle was by one of the test crews. (The way the Russians have pretty much always done it.) This single T-34 killed IIRC 28 Panzers before the Germans got a 105mm howitzer behind the sucker and took it out.
I am not sure how many test crews were out there but the real picture was much worse. Most of the tank crews in the red army had very little or no training with the new T-34 and KV tanks. A lot of tanks went into the battle w/o AP shells, only HE, and practically none of them had full load of ammo anyways. Lack or spare parts and retreival machines finished the job.
From S. Zaloga's book - "... one determined 37mm gun crew reported firing 23 times against a single t-34 only managing to jam the tank's turret ring." As you can see tank was the very best for what it was designed, but not the crew training. After being struck 23 times that T-34 let that crew live to report. On many occasions russian tankers simply had no other choice than to ram enemy tanks or just roll over anti tank guns...
