That's so cuuute..... how many grinding bleeders did that produce? neat lil b*tch, Joe.

did you think that talonite was as difficult to grind as you anticipated, Joe?

I had to cut and paste the image into the browser to see it the first time, then the second it worked for me by clicking on Joe's link. Now all I get is the Imagestation denial when I bring up this thread.

Straighten it out, Joe, or I'll sic IG on ya.... :)

thank's Sean,i can never get the photos to work right!
Fitz, not really as bad as i thought it would be...i just used fresh belts and whole bunch of bandaids;) drilling it on the other hand would be a total waste without carbide bits...thanks for the nice comments gents

Yeah, didn't find it tough to grind, either, Joe.

Some time back I bought a bar of 1/16" Talonite from Chuck Bybee to make some paring knives. (I have a Stellite 6K parer from a maker named George Young from Kokomo, IN, who's been using the stuff forever, so I thought some Talonite parers would make nice gifts.) I tried a slackbelt grind on the first one, only to find that was the absolutely wrong edge for this stuff. Then I found out that if you put any lateral pressure on the blade, it bends. I didn't pursue it further.

We used to make a cobalt alloy like Stellite back when I worked for VR/Wesson in 1971, and it made some decent blades, but I don't remember it bending this readily. Do you, or anyone, know if the different cobalt-alloy grades have different "stiffnesses" at the same thickness and are still suitable for edge retention?

I suppose that little bitty was thicker, looks like, and too small to observe any bending. I like it.

Pretty "sharp" there, for sure! I like your choice of material, too. That lil'rascal looks like it would draw blood before it makes contact!

fitzo,

I agree, the 1/16 inch Talonite is hard to grind without bending. I use a push stick to hold it against the wheel. Paring knives made from Talonite are very popular.

Joe,

I like your knife. Give me a call. I'll trade your knife for a bigger piece of Talonite.

Good one, Joe! Hey can I borrow that? I got a chunk of something stuck between my teeth...
